4.05 Lingfield – HAZY COSMIC JANE (0.5pt e/w with firms paying 3 places – 20/1 bet365)
HAZY COSMIC JANE shaped well on her first four starts, including a nursery debut 11-1 third over 6f at Kempton last month. She trailed home 17th of 20 in a £100,000 sales race at Newmarket last time but started at 100-1 and was drawn on the wrong side and ridden patiently when it paid to race up with the pace. She emerged sixth best of those to race on the near side and the best of those, sixth-placed Aniasa (rated 74), was backed from 40-1 into 12-1 when landing a Ripon Listed race just 48 hours later. Des Donovan’s Starman filly won’t have any problem with the return to 7f/Polytrack and is 2lb lower than at Kempton.
7.15 Hamilton – TEMPER TRAP (1.5pt win – 9/4 bet365)
TEMPER TRAP did this column a favour when scoring at Carlisle last week and, while I usually oppose last-time out Tim Easterby-trained handicap winners when they bid to follow up in another handicap, this veteran holds his form well and is an exception to the rule. When lining up on the back of a win or runner-up effort, his record when returned to the track within 28 days of his latest start stands at 11 wins from 21 starts for a profit of £16.11 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 5.10, A/E = 2.15). Those figures include a two from two haul at Hamilton and the rain-softened ground is no issue.
7.30 Kempton – TAAKLAM (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 bet365)
Ed Walker has a very solid record with his second time out juveniles, scoring with 52 of the 293 qualifiers (17.8% strike-rate) against an expected winners score of 39.97 (A/E = 1.30). We’d have made a tiny loss to a £1 level stake at SP by backing them blind (-£3.10) but that becomes +£44.82 at Betfair SP (after 2% commission) and the score since the start of last year is 15 from 50 (30%) for a profit of £49.30 at SP (+£64.86 at BSP). TAAKLAM (stall 11 of 12) is the latest qualifier, and he could be worth chancing despite his wide draw. He caught the eye when seventh of ten at Ffos Las on his debut in early July, keeping on well after blowing the start and running green. The son of Mehmas has been gelded since and the stable’s two other second time out two-year-olds who were gelded following their debuts – Desert Doctor and Amichi – both won at Kempton (4-1 and 10-1 respectively).
