2.45 Brighton – SUGAR KANE (0.5pt e/w – 11/1 bet365)
I wouldn’t usually rush to have a bet in a 6f 0-55 handicap for three-year-olds at Brighton, but I want to oppose likely favourite SUMMERTIME BLUES in the first-time cheekpieces. Archie Watson’s son of Pinatubo was beaten into second place when 7-4 favourite at Windsor on last month’s handicap debut and his trainer has a modest record when using this headgear, scoring with 28 of the 306 qualifiers (9.2% strike-rate) for a huge loss of £195.93 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 41.32, A/E = 0.68). The strike-rate drops to 7.4% for the turf qualifiers. SUGAR KANE wasn’t beaten by far over course and distance under Jim Crowley on his penultimate start and will appreciate the return to a left-handed track after his modest sixth at Leicester. Crowley is back on board and the Kubler yard has a good record here, scoring with 14 of their 44 runners for a profit of £24.15.
5.15 Yarmouth – ZOOKS (1.5pt win – 7/2 bet365)
ZOOKS is a qualifier on the same angle that found easy Newmarket winner Beylerbebi on Saturday – namely Ian Williams-trained last time out winners, returned to the track within eight days, running in a turf handicap. The score this century stands at 31 winners from 70 bets (44.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £39.22 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected number of winners = 19.69, A/E = 1.57). The five-year-old, a winner at Chelmsford in February, doubled her career tally when arriving late from midfield to land a 1m6f amateur riders’ handicap at Ffos Las last week and should get a sound pace to chase despite the small field.
8.55 Kempton – SYNERGISM (2pt win – Evs bet365)
SYNERGISM was a typical Sir Mark Prescott handicap project, running down the field at huge prices in novice company over 6f-7f before winning well backed over 9.4f at Wolverhampton on his handicap debut and first start since a gelding operation. The son of Soldier Hollow finished a close second the next twice before showing improvement when upped in trip to 1m6f at Sandown, arriving late under Luke Morris to score by three-quarters of a length. He was only fourth when 6-4 favourite at Ffos Las on his latest assignment but was very slowly away in a race started by flag and did well to finish just over five lengths behind the winner. The first three home were in the first three throughout and he looks set to run a big race now upped to 2m for the first time and returned to the all-weather.

Andrew’s Angles – Soft Ground Sires for When Summer Weather Turns
The British weather has taken a turn for the worse in the past few days (as it usually does when hosepipe bans are introduced) and we saw thunderstorms turn the ground soft at Windsor on Monday night and Beverley raced on officially heavy going. Windsor’s muddy track produced some bookmaker friendly results (33-1 and 14-1…
