Wednesday marks day one of yet another top festival of racing, with Chester’s May meeting getting underway. Andrew Mount has four top tips on the day for you to follow.

Nine of the last ten winners of this 6f handicap made the running or at least raced prominently, whereas horses ridden patiently were just one from 68 in the same period. As usual with sprints at Chester, the draw also has a major influence on results with eight of the last ten winners drawn in stall 5 or lower. Predicting who is going to make the early running is not always as simple as glancing at a pace map but it’s hard to imagine Pierre-Louis Jamin not trying to take OLD CHUMS straight to the front. Tom Dascombe’s son of Kodiac was headed on the line after making the running over 7f at Kempton last time, to take his record since fitted with cheekpieces to 13122 (2-5). He’s 0-2 on turf but he showed promise on deep ground on each occasion, despite that not being the type of surface he’s bred for. The ground, officially good with no rain forecast, should be more suitable today and he could prove hard to catch.
BEYOND BORDERS is another who is unlikely to be too far away in the early stages and though beaten by six and a half lengths into second place at Pontefract last time he wasn’t suit by racing on the outside of the pacesetter when it was vitally important to get on the inside rail. If we ignore his seasonal debuts, his record in sprints reads 121112 (4-6), including two wins from two starts on left-handed tracks.
4.20 Kelso – BOLLINGERANDKRUG (1pt win – 14/1 bet365)

BOLLINGERANDKRUG is game under pressure and loves Kelso, taking his course record to 411563212111 (6-12) when scoring by a neck from Duty Calls (winner since) over this 2m1f trip on November 11th. The nine-year-old has been beaten by 36, 36 and 18.5 lengths in his three subsequent starts but they came at other tracks (Newbury, Musselburgh and Newbury again) and the return to today’s venue is a huge bonus. He’s 10lb higher than when successful in this race last year but is still worth a punt.
It was a bit of an odd move to run PARISENCORE over hurdles at Musselburgh last time, as he’d finished second in both starts over fences, latterly by just a neck. The Nicky Richards-trained eight-year-old has done his winning in the March to October period and, since the beginning of 2019, his trainer’s record in handicap chases with horses who contested a handicap hurdle on their latest start stands at ten winners from 27 bets for a profit of £37.85 to a £1 level stake at SP. The last three qualifiers won (11-2, 5-2 and 8-11) and Parisencore is also worth a bet.
