2.28 Nottingham – GLORY ROAD (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
The three runners with previous experience in this six-runner 1m novice contest have not impressed on the clock and it could pay to concentrate on the newcomers. Ralph Beckett’s GLORY LOAD looks the most interesting given his trainer’s fine record with newcomers at this venue. The last five colts to qualify on this angle have recorded form figures of 11122 and Beckett won this with the well backed going The Distance two years ago. The son of Too Darn Hot is bred to appreciate today’s easy ground, which might not suit the unraced Gosden runner WISE PRINCE.
3.35 Ludlow – STRAW FAN JACK (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill, bet365, 888sport)
STRAW FAN JACK signed off last spring with a course and distance victory, causing an 11-2 upset in the three-runner Boyne Cup. Ludlow’s fences take some jumping, and I like supporting last time out chase winners from this venue when they line up in another chase, as 33 of the 132 qualifiers have followed up since the beginning of 2022 for a profit of £21.55 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 27.06, A/E = 1.22). The other angle with the Sheila Lewis-trained ten-year-old is time of year – his record in October stands at 012211 (3-6) for a profit of £27.50 to a £1 level stake at SP, with the ‘duck egg’ coming on his debut under Rules when 66-1 for a Worcester bumper back in 2019. Both runner-up efforts were by just a head (10-1 and 8-1).
