3.00 Newmarket – ROYAL VELVET (1pt win – 7/2 William Hill)
ROYAL VELVET won the 7f fillies’ handicap at York despite challenging on the far side of the track where the ground was slower and that form has been boosted by subsequent wins from the runner-up Maybe Not (9-4), 11th Dash Of Azure (15-8) and 13th Eternal Sunshine (12-1, 11-2 and 7-2). Sixteenth-placed Bellarchi was only a neck behind Dash Of Azure on her next start for a £22.57 CSF. William Knight’s four-year-old was pulled out of an intended engagement at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting because of unsuitably soft ground and today’s conditions will be more to her liking, albeit we could have done without the watering. The drop to 6f is a worry for this strong stayer but she has what looks the best of the draw in stall 11 of 11 (stalls stands’ side), there’s plenty of early pace on offer and she’s clear of her field on last time out speed ratings (according to Proform). SHALLOW, fourth at 50-1 in the same York fillies’ nursery as Royal Velvet, could be the one for the forecast.
3.35 Newmarket – CATULLUS (1pt win – 13/2 William Hill, Boylesports)
CATULLUS (stall 2) is drawn lower than ideal for the Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes, but Charlie Appleby’s colt looks by far the likeliest leader and should be able to get across to the rail. He caught the eye on his debut when a 20-1 third to stablemate Distant Storm (re-opposes today) and did so again when runner-up to Publish at Sandown. He bolted up from the front when prohibitive odds for a Yarmouth maiden last time and Billy Loughnane is 16 from 28 when riding for Charlie Appleby (+£12.27 to a £1 level stake at SP, expected winners = 10.84, A/E = 1.48).
