Ascot Racing Tips (Saturday 8 August 2026)

Six races make up the 2026 Shergar Cup, with the action getting under way at 1.35pm. Check out Andrew’s trio of tops for the day at Ascot.

1.35 Ascot – Fandom (1pt win – 7/1 Ladbrokes, Coral)

Fandom hasn’t had much luck with the draw in big races this summer – he was on the wrong side when a respectable 50-1 13th of 27 in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and again when down the field at 33-1 in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood last week. Richard Hannon’s five-year-old is a good statistical fit for the 5f Shergar Cup Dash, having prepped in a 6f Class 2 handicap like the majority of recent winners, and he went close over course and distance on his penultimate start. I like his draw in stall 7 – he should be able to get cover – and the strong pace will suit.

3.20 Ascot – Thunder Call (1pt win – 2/1 Ladbrokes Coral, 15/8 generally)

The Shergar Cup Sprint is a good race for high-drawn hold-up horses, and the William Haggas-trained Thunder Call fits the bill. The son of Pinatubo landed his first two starts this term – a 6f maiden ta Kempton by six lengths before a 22-runner York handicap over the same trip – and his subsequent one-length third to Jazl and Newmarket’s July festival was an even better effort as her fared best of those to come from off the pace (winner “raced near side, made all” and runner-up “raced centre, prominent2, led group over 1f out”). Sixth placed Ghost Mode went on to win at Glorious Goodwood to give the form a boost, and he remains open to further improvement.

15:20 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint (Handicap)

4.30 Ascot – Ozat (1.5pt win – 4/1 Ladbrokes, Coral)

Since 2015 (ten renewals, as there was no Shergar Cup in 2020) backing four and five-year-olds in the Shergar Cup Mile who were ridden patiently last time out would have found eight winners from 32 bets for a profit of £26.91 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected wins = 3.46, A/E = 2.31). Only ten of the 32 qualifiers were ranked seventh or lower in the weights and five of them win (+£23.41). Ozat, number nine on the Ascot racecard, was repeatedly denied a clear passage when down the field in the Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood and holds solid claims under Ryan Moore.
