Six races take place at Ascot on Saturday 20 December, as the Long Walk Hurdle serves up the final Grade 1 contest before Christmas. There’s some competitive action throughout the afternoon, and our in-house tipster Steve Chambers picks out his best Ascot tips for the day.
Ascot Racing Tips (Saturday 20 December)
Starting at 12.45pm with a three-runner race, the Ascot card gets more competitive as the day goes on and we head to the second part of the afternoon for our best bets.
2.25 Ascot – Potters Charm (1pt win – 9/1)
A hugely exciting novice hurdler, Potters Charm shaped like he could be the next superstar from the ranks of Nigel Twiston-Davies when winning the Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree, but the Naunton inmate has struggled to kick on from that Grade 1 win. Looking to recapture his best form, he will take his chance in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot at 2.25pm and he could prove to be an excellent value play. The likes of Honesty Policy and the ever-improving Impose Toi set the standard alongside two-times winner Crambo, but Potters Charm, who was last seen finishing third in the Ascot Hurdle could relish the step up to three miles here. He fell last time he tackled this trip in the West Yorkshire Hurdle, but he’s worth another go over the trip and if he can produce his best then he could well spark a shock in the feature event of the day.
3.00 Ascot – Victtorino (1pt win – 11/2)
Victtorino will bid for a stunning third win on the bounce in the Howden Silver Cup Handicap Chase at 3.00pm at Ascot on Saturday, and the Venetia Williams-trained star could well land the hat-trick at the Berkshire track. Four wins from five at the track, Victtorino appears to come to life when he lines up in these competitive handicap chases at Ascot and he’s only 3lbs higher than last year’s winning mark. He is sure to improve for his run in the Coral Gold Cup Handicap Chase at Newbury, where he finished way down the field, but it’s the return to Ascot that should bring on the improvement and the Williams string are firing on all cylinders at the moment, and he’s certainly the one to beat.
3.35 Ascot – Alexei (1pt win – 4/1)
If Joe Tizzard’s Alexei is going to turn into a potential Champion Hurdle contender then he will have to win the final race on the card at 3.35pm in style. A winner at Ascot off a mark of 127 earlier in the season, he then produced a career best when romping to victory in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham, and he’s now set to take his chance on Saturday off a mark of 147. He will have the burden of top weight in this contest, but he earned 40/1 quotes for the Champion Hurdle after his Greatwood win, and a repeat of that effort here should see him go close. He gives weight away to some smart rivals in this contest, but he certainly looks a horse with huge improvement still to come, and he can make it three wins on the bounce for the Tizzard yard.
