17:00 – Larkhall Construction Handicap (Bath Summer Stayers’ Series Qualifier)

Race Details: 1m 6f | Class 5 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a small-field staying handicap but it is not lacking in angles. Lusaka heads the market after a string of solid efforts and arrives here looking the percentage call, while No More Bolero and Percy Jones bring the joint-highest mark into it and both have bits of form that make them dangerous if bouncing back. Kotari is interesting from the inside stall with the best Topspeed figure in the line-up, and Taritino is the sort who could easily outrun his price if ready after a break. In truth, it is not a deep race for the grade and that makes race fitness, stamina at the trip and tactical positioning around Bath more important than usual. A tricky enough opener, but not an impossible one to solve.

Top Selections

1. Lusaka – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Rose Dawes | Trainer: John & Rhys Flint | Form: 6-5824 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 73

Lusaka is the solid one in a race where a few arrive with something to prove. He has been knocking on the door lately, with that recent sequence of 5-8-2-4 reading well enough for this level, and a mark of 86 does not look beyond him in a Class 5 stayers’ event. He is an exposed eight-year-old, so there are no great secrets, but exposed can also mean dependable when others are blowing hot and cold. Rose Dawes knows the horse and this looks the right sort of opening. At 5/2 he is not exactly a giveaway, but he is the one with the fewest questions to answer and holds strong claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Kotari – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rhys Clutterbuck | Trainer: Gary & Josh Moore | Form: 3554-6 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 88

Kotari makes plenty of each-way appeal in an eight-runner race, especially with three places on offer. The recent form line does not scream winner, but there was enough in his reappearance sixth to think he could come on for it, and his overall profile suggests this sort of test is well within range. That Topspeed figure of 88 is the best in the field, and from stall 1 he should be able to secure a handy position if Rhys Clutterbuck is positive early. He is not one for maximum trust, but 7/1 looks fair in a race where several of the principals are short enough for what they have actually achieved this season. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lusaka is the win play because he brings the most solid recent profile and looks the likeliest to run his race. For those wanting a bit more juice, Kotari is the each-way punt at 7/1, with his speed figure and low draw giving him definite appeal. No More Bolero and Percy Jones are the obvious dangers if either stages a revival.

17:35 – Juddmonte EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (For Horses In Band D) (EBF Restricted Race Qualifier) (GBB)

Race Details: 5f | Class 2 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

Restricted maidens for 2yos at Bath can be messy little affairs, but this does have a fairly obvious starting point in Bill The Bull, who sets the standard on what he has already shown. His three runs have all been respectable, his mark of 86 towers over most of these, and stall 1 could be handy over a sharp 5f here. The question is whether anything unexposed can jump past him, with newcomers South West and Lucky Larry the interesting unknowns, while Temple Court and Graceful George are entitled to improve from quiet enough starts. It is not a deep maiden for the grade, but with several once-raced types and a few well-bred unknowns, it is not quite the penalty kick the market may suggest.

Top Selections

1. Bill The Bull – 5/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Pat Cosgrave | Trainer: Adam Kirby | Form: 434 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 74

He is the one they all have to beat. Three runs in, Bill The Bull has already shown a level of form the rest are mostly guessing at, and that 86 rating gives him a clear edge in a race full of newcomers and ordinary debut efforts. His latest fourth was another solid piece of sprint maiden form and the 74 Topspeed figure is comfortably the best on offer here. From stall 1, Pat Cosgrave should be able to bag a handy position around a track where that matters. At 5/4 he is not exactly hiding from the assessor or the market, but he is still hard to oppose in this company. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. South West – 11/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Finley Marsh | Trainer: Richard Hughes | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

If you want something at a workable each-way price against the favourite, South West makes plenty of appeal. Richard Hughes can ready a juvenile first time, and this does not look a vintage restricted maiden despite the Class 2 label. Stall 5 is perfectly fine for a Bath sprint debutant and Finley Marsh is a positive rider for this sort of assignment. The market has him shorter than most of the unraced brigade, which is usually worth noting in these early-season 2yo contests, and 11/2 looks fair in a race where only one rival has really achieved anything of note. He looks the sensible each-way punt rather than a wild stab. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Bill The Bull is the straightforward win play and the one with the strongest credentials by some distance. For an each-way alternative, South West is the interesting unexposed runner at a backable price in a race lacking depth behind the favourite. Temple Court is the obvious danger if improving sharply from his debut, while Graceful George is not entirely dismissed.

18:05 – Hampton By Hilton Bath City Handicap (Bath Summer Sprint Series Qualifier)

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a typically tight Bath sprint for three-year-olds, with plenty arriving from the same level and not much separating the principals on official ratings. Tickettothestars and Forever Glamorous bring the most solid recent form to the table and both look well suited by a sharp 5f test, while Luna Beaux and Miss Magic Dragon have already shown they can be competitive in this grade. Apex Star is another with a workable profile from stall 1 if getting the run of the race. It is not a deep contest, but it is a tricky little handicap because several are exposed enough to be predictable without being bombproof. In that scenario, proven current sharpness and the ability to travel strongly around Bath’s undulations could be decisive.

Top Selections

1. Tickettothestars – 4/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Darragh Keenan | Trainer: Rod Millman | Form: 545142 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 64

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where a lot of these are taking turns without really progressing. Tickettothestars has been knocking on the door, and that latest second reads well enough in the context of this modest Class 6, especially as he is now proven to be operating consistently from this sort of mark. A topspeed figure of 64 puts him right in the mix, and Rod Millman’s sprinters are rarely short of pace. The wide draw is not ideal at Bath, but if Darragh Keenan can get him into a handy rhythm early, he has the form and the current edge to go one better. At 4/1, he looks the percentage call.

Bet: WIN

2. Forever Glamorous – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gina Mangan | Trainer: Christopher Mason | Form: 236-23 | Rating: 65 | Topspeed: 59

Forever Glamorous is becoming expensive to follow if you keep backing her for the win, but for an each-way play she makes obvious sense. She has been admirably consistent, finishing placed on both starts this season, and there is nothing in this line-up to suggest she will suddenly drop out of the frame if reproducing that level. Stall 11 asks a question, yet she has enough tactical speed to get involved and her mark of 65 still gives her every chance in this company. Gina Mangan knows the track well, and in a race where reliability counts for plenty, she looks a very solid each-way punt at 4/1.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Tickettothestars is the win play because he brings the strongest recent profile and looks the one most likely to run his race again. Forever Glamorous is the sensible each-way option given her consistency and place claims in an 11-runner field. The obvious dangers are Luna Beaux, who is respected at this level, and Apex Star from the inside draw if getting a clean break.

18:40 – RUHX Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 5 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a competitive little sprint rather than a race packed with future stars, and in truth it looks the sort of Bath handicap where track position and sharpness will matter as much as raw ability. Lequinto arrives in winning form and is entitled to plenty of respect, while Strike has been knocking loudly on the door and should be thereabouts again. The Flying Seagull has the best rating in the field alongside Glamour Show and has been holding his form well enough, though neither arrives looking thrown in. Jax Edge has a solid topspeed figure for this level and could easily get involved if breaking cleanly. It is not an easy race to attack with total confidence, but there are a couple who make more appeal than the market suggests.

Top Selections

1. Strike – 5/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Jonathan Portman | Form: 3-2832 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 68

Strike is the one I want on side. He is an exposed 8yo, yes, but exposed sprinters win plenty of races at Bath when they are in the groove, and his recent figures say exactly that. He has been running consistently well without getting his head in front, finishing second last time after another honest effort, and this mark still looks workable. Drawn in 5, he should have every chance to secure a handy position, and Rob Hornby is a positive booking around this place. At 5/1, he makes more appeal than some of the shorter-priced runners because you know he will turn up and run his race. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Jax Edge – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Gina Mangan | Trainer: Christopher Mason | Form: 10-946 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 74

Jax Edge is interesting at a slightly bigger price than a few of the obvious ones, and he looks the each-way play. His recent form figures do not leap off the page, but that 74 topspeed number is a proper clue in a race like this, and he has enough tactical pace to be a nuisance if things fall right from stall 4. He is now 6, so there are no mysteries, but this is not a deep Class 5 and he does not need to improve a stone to make the frame. Gina Mangan knows him well enough, and 11/2 is fair for a horse with the pace profile to go close at this level. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Strike is the straight win bet because he brings the most solid recent profile and looks sure to give you a run for your money. Jax Edge is the each-way option in a 10-runner field, with enough pace and a strong enough topspeed figure to hit the frame. Lequinto and The Flying Seagull are the obvious dangers if reproducing their better efforts.

19:15 – Mitchell & Co Classified Stakes (Div I)

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is hardly a deep sprint, but it does revolve around a couple with very obvious claims. Dion Baker arrives off the back of a deserved win and is the one they all have to beat on ratings, while Wedgewood has been holding his form well in this basement grade and looks the chief threat again. Magnificent Mel is the interesting one against the older exposed sprinters, getting plenty of weight as the sole 3yo in the field, and that alone gives him each-way appeal. After that, it gets murkier. Porfin is capable on a going day, Jackie Brown is not without a squeak, but several of these have become hard to trust. In truth, this looks a modest Class 6 where recent sharpness and track position should decide it.

Top Selections

1. Dion Baker – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Darragh Keenan | Trainer: Michael Wigham | Form: -57441 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 41

Dion Baker is the percentage call. He finally got his head back in front last time and that effort was coming, because his previous few runs hinted that he was knocking on the door in this sort of company. In a race lacking depth, being the highest-rated runner on 62 matters, and Wigham’s 7yo is at least arriving here with his confidence topped up rather than trying to rediscover it. Stall 8 is not ideal round Bath, but over 5f it should not be fatal if Keenan gets him organised early. At 11/8 he is no hidden gem, but he is the one with the clearest, most solid profile and looks hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Magnificent Mel – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Rod Millman | Form: 527527 | Rating: 55 | Topspeed: 54

Magnificent Mel makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where a lot of the older horses have shown their hand already. This 3yo gets in off just 127, which is a notable edge in a classified of this nature, and his recent form is more respectable than flashy. He has been running creditably without getting his turn, and that 54 topspeed figure stacks up well enough in this company. Drawn in 1, Rob Hornby should be able to keep things simple and hold a handy spot. At 15/2, he looks the value alternative to the obvious pair, especially if the weight concession helps him find a bit extra late on. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dion Baker is the win bet because he brings the strongest recent form and the most solid overall profile to a weak race. For an each-way punt, Magnificent Mel appeals as the unexposed lightweight against a bunch of exposed older sprinters. Wedgewood is the obvious danger after his consistent spell, while Porfin could also sneak into the frame if the race falls apart late.

19:50 – Mitchell & Co Classified Stakes (Div II)

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is hardly a deep classified, but it does look a fairly workable Bath sprint if you can trust the recent pieces of form. Ken Brulee arrives off a win and is the obvious starting point, especially as a 3yo getting weight from most of these exposed older sprinters. Sisters In The Sky has been knocking around in similar company and looks the solid yardstick from stall 1, while Spirited Dancer has enough on ratings to get involved if building on his latest effort. Coast is another with place claims after a better run last time. The rest have questions to answer, with Chiedozie and I Was Thinking needing to bounce back. Not a strong race by any stretch, but the front end of the market makes more appeal than usual in this grade.

Top Selections

1. Ken Brulee – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Rose Dawes | Trainer: Mark Usher | Form: 565-01 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 50

He makes the most appeal in a race where plenty of these have had their chances. Ken Brulee is the least exposed runner in the field, arrives here after getting his head in front, and his figures stack up well for this level. A mark of 58 is the joint-highest on offer, his Topspeed of 50 is the best in the race, and crucially he carries only 133lb as a 3yo against older rivals lumping 135lb. That combination matters over a sharp Bath 5f. Mark Usher’s runner looks to have found his level now, and at 5/2 he is no giveaway, but he is still the one they all have to beat. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Sisters In The Sky – 7/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Ashley Lewis | Trainer: Grace Harris | Form: 127483 | Rating: 55 | Topspeed: 49

For an each-way play, Sisters In The Sky looks the percentage call. She is a thoroughly exposed 7yo, yes, but that is not a bad thing in this grade when the recent form reads respectably and the race lacks depth. Her latest third advertised that she is still competitive, and a Topspeed of 49 says she retains enough dash for a race like this. Stall 1 could also be a help around here if she can hold a position early. Grace Harris knows how to place these older sprinters, and 7/2 is fair enough for one who looks very likely to give you a run for your money. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Ken Brulee is the win bet, as he brings the strongest recent profile and the best speed figure in a weak race. For cover, Sisters In The Sky makes plenty of each-way sense with three places on offer, given her solid recent efforts and favourable draw. Spirited Dancer is the obvious danger if he builds on his latest fifth, while Coast is not without place claims.

20:25 – Bath University Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 6 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a very ordinary 3yo handicap on paper and, in truth, the market has probably latched onto the right pair. Mali Star arrives off back-to-back thirds and sets the standard on recent evidence, while Atalanta Mist has also been knocking on the door and is the obvious one to give him most to think about. Behind them, it gets messy quickly. Us Officer returns from an absence with a bit to prove, Elora Prince is dangerously weighted if rediscovering anything, and a few such as Shirakawa and Castlekeely are still trying to convince they really want this sort of test. In a 14-runner Bath handicap there is always room for a surprise, but this doesn’t look a deep race and the more solid recent form may well dominate.

Top Selections

1. Mali Star – 7/4 with Bet365

Jockey: George Bass | Trainer: Jack Channon | Form: 056-33 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 52

Mali Star is short enough, but not without reason. He has hit the frame on both starts this season, and those recent thirds give him the most convincing profile in a race where plenty are either regressive or still guessing. A mark of 64 looks fair rather than punitive, and his Topspeed figure of 52 is solid in this company. Jack Channon’s runner doesn’t need to improve much to win a race of this standard, and George Bass should be able to keep things uncomplicated from stall 4. At 7/4 he is hardly a hidden gem, but he is the one with the strongest claims and the least amount of guesswork attached. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Atalanta Mist – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Marcus Tregoning | Form: 99-533 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 38

Atalanta Mist makes plenty of each-way appeal because she is at least arriving here in form, and that counts for plenty at this level. The sequence of 5-3-3 suggests she has found her level now handicapping, and while she may not possess the same raw solidity as Mali Star on the clock, she has been competitive in similar races and shouldn’t be far away again. Drawn in 2, Rob Hornby has the chance to hold a handy position around this quirky track, which is often half the battle at Bath. At 7/2 she is no rags play, but in a race lacking depth she looks the percentage each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mali Star is the win play because his recent form is the most reliable in a weak-looking contest and he doesn’t need to step forward much to land this. Atalanta Mist is the each-way alternative, arriving in decent nick and likely to give her running again. If looking beyond the pair, Us Officer is the obvious danger if ready after the break, while Elora Prince is not entirely dismissed off a low weight.

21:00 – Thank You To Bath University Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 6 | Going: 5.9) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a very ordinary Class 6 on paper, but that does not make it simple. Several arrive with bits of recent form in the book without screaming reliability, and that usually makes a Bath handicap more about who gets the run of the race than raw ability. Galactic Glow has been knocking on the door and is an obvious starting point, while Man Is King comes here in better heart than most after two wins in his last four starts. Nuptown Girl is another with a string of solid efforts, though she is becoming expensive to follow. Lower down, Bobby Dassler is not without each-way appeal in a race where plenty of these have questions to answer. Tricky rather than strong, then, and tactics on this sharp track will matter.

Top Selections

1. Galactic Glow – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Taylor Fisher | Trainer: Joe Tickle | Form: 45-623 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 57

Galactic Glow is hardly a hidden one, but he makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking depth. His recent figures of 6-2-3 show a horse holding his form well, and he does not need to find much more to take this. He is a 9yo, so nobody is pretending there is upside, but he is consistent enough for this level and gets in here off 128lb despite a fair mark of 72. Bath tends to reward runners who can hold position and keep finding, and that is very much his game. At 3/1 with Bet365, he is no giveaway, but he still looks the percentage call. Bet: WIN

2. Bobby Dassler – 9/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: William Cox | Trainer: Barry John Murphy | Form: -07234 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 52

Bobby Dassler looks the more interesting each-way angle if you want to take on the obvious pair at the head of the market. His recent form has a solid enough look for this grade, with placed efforts before a respectable fourth last time, and those runs suggest he is edging towards another competitive effort. The wide draw in 10 is not ideal around here, but this is not a deep race and he is at least arriving in better nick than plenty of these exposed older handicappers. William Cox knows how to deliver one late off this sort of mark, and 9/1 with Paddy Power feels a fair price for a horse who should be staying on when some of these have cried enough. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Galactic Glow is the solid win play given his recent consistency and the general lack of depth in the field. Bobby Dassler is the each-way punt at a more workable price in a race where plenty have patchy profiles. Man Is King is the obvious danger if building on his recent wins, while Nuptown Girl is another who has the form to be involved without looking entirely straightforward.
