Sandown‘s flat season opener takes place on Friday, with a stunning card to kick off the campaign. The Group 2 bet365 Mile has attracted potentially its strongest ever line up for its 2026 renewal.
Joe Napier previews what should be a hugely informative contest for the season ahead. He provides you with all the lowdown on the Sandown race and gives his verdict.
2026 bet365 Mile Runners
A stellar sextet will contest this year’s bet365 Mile. This is a Group 1 in all but name.
Field Of Gold is the headline act despite the strength of his rivals. Defeats on his last two starts have dented the impression he made earlier in 2025. However, there looked to be an excuse for his reverse in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes given his draw and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood was surely merely an aberration. His victories in the Craven Stakes, Irish 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes remain fierce in the memory and he is surely capable of regaining that standard of form.
If he does, he will be hard to beat, but there could be opposition of a similar calibre here. Fellow four-year-olds Zeus Olympios and Opera Ballo have also looked extremely talented. The former, is unbeaten in four starts, rising through the ranks in 2025. He beat Opera Ballo by two-and-a-quarter lengths to conclude last term at Newmarket. However, he carries a 3lb penalty for that Group 2 success, which means he concedes Field Of Gold weight.
Opera Ballo has a 5lb penalty to shoulder as he has excelled in Dubai over the winter. He scored at the first attempt at Group 1 level in the Jebel Hatta at Meydan. He is best to watch back in Britain conceding weight all-round, but he could be the most progressive.
That trio’s older rivals are no back number. Never So Brave also secured a debut Group 1 recently, landing the City Of York Stakes in August. That race is over 7f and that may remain his best trip. Nevertheless, 1m remains worth a go and his seventh in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes ties him in with Field Of Gold.
Winning that race in an enormous shock was Cicero’s Gift. Charles Hills’ six-year-old recorded a massive career best that day, but he has good form at Sandown and may have simply peaked at the right time. He is up against it here conceding weight to all bar Opera Ballo.
Last year’s winner Dancing Gemini would ordinarily deserve anything but a final mention. His form tailed off completely in 2025, but he made a very strong start to last season. Even if he recaptures those levels though, this is a stronger race than he won 12 months ago.

2026 bet365 Mile Tips
Though rank outsider Cicero’s Gift upset him, and many others, on Champions Day, Field Of Gold can return victoriously here. He was inconvenienced by the draw at Ascot, while his odds-on reverse in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood was a pace-based fluke. He was so impressive in the St James’s Palace Stakes, and on return in the Craven Stakes last season, that he should be firing on all cylinders here. The unbeaten Zeus Olympios is the relatively unknown quantity, but concedes the selection 3lb. That is enough to sway favour to the Gosden runner while the improving Opera Ballo can also go close in a fantastic renewal.
