Five courses host racing on Wednesday as fans have plenty to choose from on a packed midweek of action. All five are meetings are on the flat, so jumps aficionados must wait until later in the week.
Joe Napier picks our lucky 15 tips for this Wednesday. He has a pair of selections each from Brighton and Yarmouth to follow.
Brighton Racing Tips (Wednesday 5 August)
Brighton’s Wednesday card contains the Brighton Mile Trophy. We have a tip in that feature handicap, as well as in the preceding contest at the six-race meeting.
3.00 Brighton – Rovinia (1pt win – 15/8)
5lb claimer Owen Lewis and Rovinia have been second the last twice in races of this nature. The pair are knocking on the door and can break through here. Over 7½f at Lingfield in June, the four-year-old was beaten just a neck after being collared late on. She filled the same position over half-a-furlong shorter at the Surrey track at the end of last month. The runaway winner that day was clearly too good for the level, but unless there is a similar blot in the formbook here, Rovinia will be the one they have to beat on those two efforts, so long as she deals well with the change of venue.
3.30 Brighton – Silca Bay (1pt win – 7/2)
Another horse with whom a claimer has struck a positive relationship is Silca Bay. The apprentice Oliver Carmicahel takes 7lb off him, which has worked for two victories in his last three starts. After only moderate form to begin this campaign, a win at Goodwood preceded a fourth-placed finish at Sandown when the selection was often short of room closing in. He returned to winning ways on Newmarket’s July Course in July, pulling nicely clear of the third with the runner-up. A 4lb penalty is his punishment, but Eve Johnson Houghton’s gelding is in good form and should enjoy conditions here.
Yarmouth Racing Tips (Wednesday 5 August)
Yarmouth’s card also contains six races on a delightful Wednesday evening on the east coast. Joe has two Yarmouth tips, including one in the finale.
6.40 Yarmouth – Dowman (1pt win – 2/1)
Three of his four rivals have competed in Listed company or above (the other finishing eighth in the Super Sprint at Newbury recently) but Dowman may well prove the best treated off bottom-weight in this nursery. Representing George Boughey and Billy Loughnane, his form to date has been in modest races. His second on debut was behind today’s rival Wait Geordie at Bath. However, he now receives 4lb from that opponent, who has not progressed. Similarly, despite finishing a well-beaten second again at Bath, Dowman then got off the mark with a composed win at Windsor. The son of Sioux Nation faces his toughest test yet, but a mark of 73 is kind for a horse yet to be out of the first two. He can receive weight all-round to win well.
8.10 Yarmouth – Mayflower Rock (1pt win – 13/2)
After four races without competing, Mayflower Rock may find Classified company to possess calmer waters. Dylan Cunha’s filly ran a decent race at Windsor on her second career start when fourth of 12 in maiden company. She has otherwise finished down the field, including on handicap debut at Yarmouth most recently. That was over 7f though, which was likely too far. She drops to the minimum trip of 5f now, which makes sense based on her sire Mayson and his progeny. The experience of Stevie Donohoe can be put to good use in the saddle too.
