We are set for one of the best British Champions Day cards since its inception at Ascot on Saturday, as some of the premier Flat horses head to the Berkshire track to try and land a valuable end of season success. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers previews the action and picks out his best bets across the card…
1:55pm Ascot – Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes
Third behind Art Power and Kinross in this race 12 months ago, SPYCATCHER will look to turn the tables on that pairing on Saturday in a hugely competitive renewal of the British Champions Sprint Stakes at 1:55pm. Karl Burke’s speedster was a Group 3 winner in France three starts ago, but could only finish third at the Curragh last time out.
However, the ground should be in his favour as he has shown he relishes a bit of cut in the ground and at huge odds he looks a cracking each-way play at the current 25/1 odds. The likes of Kinross and Montassib, who head the betting, at the time of writing, are tough to beat, but Spycatcher is a class act on his day and with some firms paying five places then he’s a superb each-way bet.

Matthew Sutcliffe’s Value Punts – Unearthing the Best Value for Champions Day
Matty Sutcliffe is early out of the blocks this week, just as he hopes some of his potential value bets will be on Saturday. He has four selections across three of the Group races on Champions Day to kick you off. Published: 9.15am, Tuesday, October 15th (Odds correct at time of writing) 1:20 Ascot –…
Tue 15 Oct 20242:35pm Ascot – Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes
A stunning winner of the September Stakes, Kalpana looks every bit a Group 1 performer and is a fascinating market leader in the Fillies & Mares Stakes at 2:35pm. Aidan O’Brien’s Content is another classy performer looking to strike gold, but one that catches the eye at bigger odds is Jessica Harrington’s VILLAGE VOICE, who was last seen winning a Listed event in France.
Quickening up impressively that day off a slow pace, the four-year-old will need to improve on that effort now sent up in class, but the manner in which she dispatched of her rivals suggests there’s a lot more to come. Only beaten a couple of lengths by the top class White Birch earlier in the season, Village Voice has some very smart form in the book and she’s more than capable of running a big race in this thrilling contest.
4:35pm Ascot – Balmoral Handicap
Richard Hannon’s WITCH HUNTER has been struggling to get his head in front of late, but the former Buckingham Palace Stakes winner can relish a return to Ascot on Saturday and can bag glory in the Balmoral Handicap, which concludes the card at 4:35pm. He’s 6lbs higher than that Royal Ascot win, but he showed when second in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes earlier in the season that he is a class act on his day.
He will enjoy the huge field here and if Jamie Spencer can adopt his patient tactics again and scythe through them in the closing stages then he’s more than capable of landing the finale. It will be a tough ask, but he’s shown he can deliver the goods in this sort of contest and he could be another of notable each-way value.
