With Haydock forced to cancel their upcoming meetings due to an unfit racetrack, Carlisle have come to the rescue. They have taken over the ITV Racing fixture this Saturday.
As racing’s focus heads to Cumbria, Matthew Sutcliffe has three best bets at the venue.
Carlisle Racing Tips (Saturday 30 May)
Carlisle have stepped in to host the ITV racing fixture originally scheduled for Haydock on Saturday. Matty has three best bets on the card.
13:30 Carlisle – Betway Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-105) – Ghaiyya 13/2 1pt WIN
Charlie Johnston has a respectable 20% strike rate in course handicaps and if Ghaiyya can reproduce her effort at Hamilton two weeks ago then she looks to have a strong chance of continuing her progressive ways.
The daughter of Ghaiyyath opened her account last season in a Thirsk Fillies Maiden, before winning twice more in handicap company, both around Chester. Her latest success saw her beat Miss Apilles, and the second is now rated 23lbs higher on 100 after winning twice next time out including in listed company, finishing second in the G3 Bronte Cup last time out.
She went off the boil two starts later, but returned in strong form to beat the 4/5 Wathnan racing favourite at Doncaster by three and a half lengths. She then ran an excellent race in second off 5lbs higher at Hamilton, making most of the running and travelling comfortably with the field off the bridle before two out. The four to race directly in behind her throughout finished 6th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th beaten between nine and seventy three lengths, 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th all coming from midfield/rear.
Her performance can be upgraded on that evidence, and the winner was a well backed Wathnan racing previous course winner who is likely Royal Ascot bound. She was raised a further 3lbs for that effort, but this slight drop in trip looks to suit on that evidence and she can make it a good test from the front.
14:33 Carlisle – Betway Achilles Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo+) – Washington Heights 5/1 1pt WIN
Washington Heights fared no chance on account of his track position in rear at Newmarket last time in a race dominated by prominent racers, with the winner following up smartly in the Temple Stakes. He still caught the eye finishing off his race well under not all that much pressure, and this drop back in class can see him return to winning ways.
He was third this time last year in the Temple Stakes himself, ahead five lengths ahead of the reopposing Starlust and ahead of American Affair, with that pair subsequently finishing 4th and 1st in the G1 King Charles Stakes respectively.
Washington Heights was only beaten two lengths in that contest, and he dropped backed into listed company at York to win a shade cosily next time out, giving weight away to the second who beat Redorange in Listed company two starts later.
The market has him priced wrong on two of those aforementioned formlines, and if putting his best foot forward he can go close over a winning C&D.
15:45 Carlisle – Betway Silver Bowl Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo) – Langstone 7/2 2pt WIN
Frustratingly, we don’t have the 10/1 we did when tipping Langstone up for this race at Haydock last weekend prior to abandonment but I’m keen to go in again despite the shorter price.
Clive Cox has won this twice since 2018 and he has another strong chance with the progressive Langstone. It’s no surprise he didn’t make his debut until the 28th October, given what a physically imposing sort he is and how he behaved in the contest. Gelded soon after, he’s evidently wintered well despite not looking the finished article when winning at Doncaster on his reappearance. He was pushed along early and took a while to get into stride, but once he did he gathered plenty of momentum and despite hanging left, he ran down the 6/4 favourite King Of Earth who backed that effort up when close in a 25-runner maiden at Newbury.
He then went to Kempton to carry a penalty and despite only winning by a length and a half, he was strong value for that margin as he was carried left across the track once the pace lifted, conceding plenty of ground. Once hitting top gear, he again strode away impressively to win comfortably. The fifth, who was also carrying a penalty, has won since with an RPR of 100 and I think an opening mark of 87 could widely underestimate this strong son of Mayson who despite not bred for it, should be suited to this step up to a mile given how strong he’s been at seven.
