14:05 – NXT Big Thing Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This looks a useful little 2yo fillies’ novice rather than a throwaway opener, with a couple bringing solid racecourse evidence and several unexposed newcomers adding a layer of guesswork. Guadalevin sets the standard on bare figures after four runs and her mark of 90 tells you she has already mixed it in much warmer company than this, but she does arrive with a bit to prove after a below-par latest effort. Diamond New Bay appeals as the obvious improver after a promising debut fourth for Karl Burke, while Sara’s Silver Girl has shown enough in two starts to suggest she can be competitive from a handy low draw. The market should be a decent guide to the unraced trio, but this still feels a race where proven form may count for plenty over a sharp 5f.

Top Selections

1. Guadalevin – 11/8 with Betfair

Jockey: Paddy Bradley | Trainer: Charlie Fellowes | Form: 3246 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 76

Guadalevin is not bombproof, but she is the one with the clearest class edge and that matters in a novice like this. Her earlier efforts read well in the context of a Carlisle Class 4, and a rating of 90 absolutely towers over this field. The slight concern is the ‘6’ last time, because she didn’t build on previous promise there, but dropping into this company over a straightforward 5f looks an obvious chance to get back on track. Fellowes doesn’t need much improvement from her to win this, only a return to the level she had already shown. At 11/8, she’s no giveaway, but she is still hard to oppose on substance. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Diamond New Bay – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam James | Trainer: K R Burke | Form: 4 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed: 31

Diamond New Bay looks the value alternative and the each-way angle in a seven-runner race. A debut fourth does not leap off the page, but Burke’s youngsters often come on plenty for the experience and this filly is entitled to step forward significantly from that initial run. Sam James is a positive booking around here and this doesn’t look a deep novice outside the favourite. She lacks the lofty established figure of Guadalevin, but she has the profile of a progressive sort who could easily improve past exposed rivals such as Oh So Slow Sloth and maybe even give the market leader something to think about. Available at 5/2, she makes clear each-way appeal. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here. Guadalevin is the win play because her established form and rating give her the strongest claims if bouncing back to her previous level. Diamond New Bay is the each-way punt in a field of seven, especially if you expect the Burke filly to improve for her debut. The obvious danger is Sara’s Silver Girl, who has shown enough to nick a place if the principals underperform.

14:38 – Kingmoor Park Properties Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB/GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 3 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This has cut up badly with Aleatrix a non-runner, and it now revolves around whether Peace Belle can justify very cramped odds against two 3yo fillies who at least receive weight. Jennie Candlish’s mare is officially miles clear on the figures and the market reflects that, but she’s a 5yo novice with just two runs under her belt, so there is a small question of professionalism rather than ability. Green Area looks the obvious one to chase her home after a pair of placed efforts, while Lazy In Red is thrown in at the deep end on debut and would be a surprise package if good enough first time. It’s not a deep race and, truthfully, there’s not much mystery about the pecking order if Peace Belle runs to her mark.

Top Selections

1. Peace Belle – 3/10 with Bet365

Jockey: Andrew Mullen | Trainer: Jennie Candlish | Form: 44 | Rating: 107 | Topspeed: 23

On bare figures she should take a world of beating. A mark of 107 absolutely towers over this reduced field and, while those two fourth-place finishes do not look flashy in isolation, they came in stronger company than this. Candlish doesn’t have to do anything clever here; if Andrew Mullen can keep her settled over this longer trip, class ought to carry her a long way. The slight caveat is the price, because 3/10 is hardly generous in a small tactical field, but she is still the one with the form that really matters. The one they all have to beat, and hard to oppose despite the skinny odds.

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Peace Belle is the win bet and the only sensible play in a race of this size. There’s no each-way angle with just one place on offer, and Green Area is the clear danger if the favourite underperforms or the race turns tactical. Lazy In Red looks best watched on debut.

15:13 – North Lakes Energy – Harry Doyle Memorial Maiden Handicap (Div I)

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This is not a deep maiden handicap, but it does look a slightly awkward little sprint all the same. A few of these have had plenty of chances, so the focus naturally falls on the three-year-olds, with Long Shot especially interesting after a string of solid efforts in similar company. Why Because has the plum draw and the market will warm to him, though he does come with a familiar “threatens more than delivers” profile. Fate’s Gambit at least arrives off a respectable third, while April Diamond is weighted to be involved if reproducing his better bits of form. In truth, this looks the sort where tactical position and a clean run over 6f could matter every bit as much as raw ability.

Top Selections

1. Long Shot – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin McSweeney | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 242404 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 50

Long Shot makes plenty of appeal in a race where several of these have exposed limitations. He has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front, but that form string reads well enough for this grade and his mark of 69 does not look harsh for a three-year-old taking on mostly older, ordinary rivals. Stall 4 should let Oisin McSweeney ride a sensible race, and this one has the look of a horse who can travel into it strongly before being asked late. At 9/2, he is not exactly hiding, but he still looks the most likely winner in a weakish contest. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Why Because – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: David Nolan | Trainer: Paul Midgley | Form: 5-6475 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 36

Why Because is the obvious each-way angle from the inside draw, and in a race lacking depth that counts for plenty around Carlisle over this trip. He has not been finishing his races with much authority, which is why I would rather play him each-way than trust him outright, but there have been enough competitive efforts in that recent form to suggest he can make the frame again. David Nolan is a positive booking for these sprint handicaps, and Paul Midgley knows the time of day with this type. Available at 4/1, he is a fairly short each-way price, but this is not a race packed with lurking improvers. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Long Shot is the win play on the strength of his recent consistency and the likelihood that this level is within range. Why Because is the safer each-way punt from a handy low draw in a modest field. The main dangers look to be Fate’s Gambit, who is at least arriving in some sort of form, and April Diamond if bouncing back to one of his better efforts.

15:48 – North Lakes Energy – Harry Doyle Memorial Maiden Handicap (Div II)

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This looks a pretty ordinary maiden handicap on paper, but that doesn’t mean it lacks betting angles. Hey Havana brings the most solid recent profile after a string of placed efforts, while Big Apple Jack has been knocking on the door in similar company and should be thereabouts again. Supreme Dancer is another with a consistent look in a race where many have shown their hand already. Behind those, it gets messy quickly: Uniter has a bit to prove despite attracting support in some quarters, and several of the older runners, including Stoneywell and Our Nicola, arrive with patchy recent form. In a weakish Class 6, current sharpness and willingness to finish the job may count for more than raw ability, and that slightly tempers confidence in the obvious ones.

Top Selections

1. Hey Havana – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Geoffrey Harker | Form: -25252 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 61

Hey Havana is getting a bit expensive to follow if you’ve been with him all summer, but he’s also the one arriving here with the clearest claims. Those repeated seconds tell you two things: he’s well treated enough to be very competitive in this grade, and he keeps running his race. A mark of 69 is no giveaway, yet it is workable in a race lacking depth, and that Topspeed figure of 61 is among the better pieces of evidence on offer. Connor Beasley is a positive booking in a contest where professionalism matters, and at 5/2 he still makes most appeal despite the obvious risk that he finds one too good again. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Supreme Dancer – 7/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Ethan Tindall | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 57-282 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 60

Supreme Dancer looks the each-way value against the favourite after shaping like a winner in waiting more than once. He comes here off a solid second and, unlike a few of these, still has the profile of a 3yo who can squeeze out a bit more improvement in low-grade handicaps. The draw in stall 2 should help around Carlisle if he can hold a position, and Ethan Tindall takes off useful weight from an already manageable mark of 67. His form stacks up perfectly well against the principals, and a Topspeed of 60 says he’s not short of the required pace either. At 7/2, he’s a sensible each-way punt in a race where several have questions to answer. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Hey Havana is the win play because he sets the most reliable standard and this isn’t the race to get too clever in. Supreme Dancer is the each-way alternative, especially with his profile suggesting there may still be a little upside. Big Apple Jack is the obvious danger after a series of solid efforts, while Uniter is harder to trust despite attracting attention.

16:20 – David Allen IT Solutions Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This is a proper sprint handicap puzzle rather than a race to get carried away with, and plenty arrive with something to prove. The obvious recent winners are King Of Fury, bidding for the hat-trick, and Native Instinct, who got back on track last time, while Commander Of Life also comes here off a win and is clearly thriving. The problem is that several of these are closely matched on ratings, and a few of the better treated ones have mixed recent profiles. Golden Strike catches the eye near the foot of the weights despite a lofty mark, and Son is another with the raw ability to get involved if bouncing back. In a 12-runner Carlisle sprint, track position and who gets the cleanest run will matter plenty.

Top Selections

1. Native Instinct – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam James | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 56-261 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 74

He looks the most solid option in a race full of ifs and buts. That latest win suggests he is coming to the boil again, and the overall profile of a lightly raced 4yo still gives him more upside than plenty of these battle-hardened sprinters. A draw in 2 could be handy around here if Sam James can hold a position and delay the challenge. Off 131lb he is not thrown in, but this mark still looks workable for a horse who may not have reached his ceiling at 6f yet. Available at 6/1, he makes plenty of appeal as the one most likely to run his race. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Golden Strike – 8/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Ethan Tindall | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 220175 | Rating: 95 | Topspeed: 84

He is the each-way angle in the race because his best form is right up to winning this and the market may be underestimating him slightly. That Topspeed figure of 84 is among the strongest on offer here, and although he was only fifth last time, it was not the sort of run that forces you to put a line through him. Carrying just 129lb despite a rating of 95 is an obvious plus in this grade, and Fahey sprinters are rarely dismissed lightly at Carlisle. At 8/1, with four places on offer, he looks a very fair each-way punt if reproducing one of his better efforts. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Native Instinct is the win play because he arrives with momentum and still has scope as a 4yo sprinter. Golden Strike is the each-way alternative at a workable price, especially with four places available. The main dangers are King Of Fury, who is hard to knock after two wins, and Commander Of Life, another last-time-out scorer in the right sort of form.

16:55 – Armstrong Watson Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary 3yo sprint on paper, but that does not make it straightforward. Yellow Diamonds brings the most solid recent profile after a string of placed efforts and is the obvious one, though stall 8 around Carlisle over the minimum trip is not always ideal if things get messy early. Maximum Velocity has a bit more substance to his form than his latest fifth suggests and is one of the few in here with the pace figures to make a real impact. Hares Bredth is respected after winning two starts back, while Kilmac Air still has some scope if settling into handicaps. At the prices, it feels less a deep race than a tactical little puzzle, where track position and a clean break could decide plenty.

Top Selections

1. Maximum Velocity – 5/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Alex Jary | Trainer: Nigel Tinkler | Form: 019325 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 67

Maximum Velocity gets the vote because he brings the strongest all-round profile into the race. That Topspeed mark of 67 is the best in the field, and his recent sequence suggests he is holding his form well rather than going backwards. The latest fifth was not a disgrace and the runs before that, especially the placed efforts, read perfectly well in a race of this nature. Nigel Tinkler knows the time of day with northern sprinters and this mark of 74 looks workable if he gets a decent tow into it. Available at 5/1, he looks the solid betting answer rather than a flashy one. Bet: WIN

2. Kilmac Air – 11/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Dougie Costello | Trainer: John & Sean Quinn | Form: 0436 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 53

Kilmac Air is the each-way angle in a race where plenty have shown their hand already. He is lightly raced compared to some of these, and while the bare form figures do not scream certainty, there has been enough in those efforts to think a mark of 66 could underestimate him. The Quinn yard is always worth respecting in these northern handicaps and Dougie Costello is a good booking for a sharp 5f where getting organised early matters. He does need to improve on the clock, but this is not a race overloaded with depth and 11/2 makes some appeal for a horse who could still be a progressive sort. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Maximum Velocity is the main play and looks the percentage call in a weak enough sprint. Kilmac Air is the each-way alternative in an eight-runner field, with just enough upside to make that approach worthwhile. Yellow Diamonds is the obvious danger on recent consistency, while Hares Bredth is not one to dismiss if bouncing back quickly.

17:30 – Knights Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: GOOD, Good to soft in places (Watered) | | flat

This is a competitive little 7f handicap to close the card and there are plenty arriving with something to recommend them. Keep An Eye On It and Ephron are the obvious progressive 3yos, while Between Me And U comes here chasing a hat-trick after back-to-back wins for Michael Herrington. Hostility is respected after scoring again last time, but a 4lb penalty asks a bit more now, and Barley looks one of the likelier solid-place types without screaming well treated. Draws could matter with 11 going to post, and several of these like to race handily, so getting cover and timing the run should be important. It is not a deep Class 5 by any means, but it is a trappy one, and I would rather side with the younger legs than the exposed older handicappers.

Top Selections

1. Keep An Eye On It – 10/3 with Bet365

Jockey: David Nolan | Trainer: Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood | Form: 4-5231 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 64

He looks the percentage call. That form string says he has been building towards a win and he duly delivered last time, and there is every chance there is a bit more to come now he has got his head in front. A mark of 71 still looks workable for a 3yo in this grade, and his Topspeed figure stacks up well against the market principals. Stall 11 is not ideal, but David Nolan is the right man to work that out at Carlisle. At 10/3 he is not a giveaway, but he still makes most appeal as the progressive sort in a race where plenty of the others look fully exposed. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Ephron – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Gemma Tutty | Form: -15271 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 67

Ephron is the each-way play because he brings a similar progressive profile, but at a slightly bigger price. He returned to winning ways last time and did it with a Topspeed of 67, which is one of the better figures on offer here. He is now up to a mark of 74, so there is less wriggle room than there was, but this is hardly a terrifying race for the grade and Connor Beasley is an eye-catching booking in these northern handicaps. Drawn 10, he may need things to fall right, yet he looks the type to travel strongly into it. At 11/2, he makes plenty of appeal as an each-way punt with upside. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep An Eye On It is the win play, chiefly because he looks on the upgrade and may not have stopped improving yet. Ephron is the each-way alternative in a race where his recent speed figure gives him solid place claims. The obvious dangers are Between Me And U, going for the hat-trick, and the dependable Barley, who should be thereabouts again.
