14:00 – Get Best Odds With Oddschecker Maiden Stakes (GBB/IRE Incentive Race)

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a compact five-runner maiden but it does not lack interest, chiefly because Queen Of Christmas is the one piece of solid form on the table after already showing useful ability. She sets the standard on her debut fifth and an opening mark of 74, which is often a fair guide in races like this. The market says the main threat is Louis The Fifth, a Michael Bell newcomer who has attracted support, while In The Black is another debutant from a yard that can pop up at a price. With three unraced juveniles taking on a filly who has already been to the track, this looks less a deep maiden and more a question of whether experience can trump potential first time out.

Top Selections

1. Queen Of Christmas – 1/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: K R Burke | Form: 5 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 58

She is the obvious one and, in a race where the rest are all guessing games, that counts for plenty. Queen Of Christmas has already shown enough to earn a mark of 74 and a Topspeed of 58, which gives her a clear edge on the bare figures. Burke’s juveniles are usually forward enough to do themselves justice early in the season, and Clifford Lee is a positive booking in these sharp 5f events. At even money she is not exactly hiding from the assessor or the layers, but in a field of just five she looks the runner with the fewest questions to answer and is hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in a five-runner race: Queen Of Christmas is the win play and the only bet worth making. Each-way angles are poor in this sort of field. Louis The Fifth is the obvious danger if the market confidence proves well placed, while In The Black is the interesting outsider on debut.

14:30 – Bet Smarter With Oddschecker+ EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly straightforward little novice on paper rather than a deep puzzle. Silesia sets the standard by a long way on what she has already achieved, with an official mark of 85 and three solid runs to her name, including a pair of placed efforts before another good third last time. The rest are either newcomers or fillies with only one run under their belt, so the question is whether any of the unraced types – notably Love Tanya and Ruby Moon – have the raw speed to trouble the favourite first time out. Enhancing shaped with a bit more promise than the bare result suggests on debut, while One Shot Kodi will need a fair chunk of improvement. In truth, this looks Silesia’s race to lose.

Top Selections

1. Silesia – 8/11 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Form: 323 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 69

Silesia brings the only properly established form into the race and, in a six-runner novice, that matters plenty. Her 323 figures tell the story of a filly who has already shown useful speed and consistency, and that mark of 85 puts her clear of these on known evidence. Kevin Ryan’s juveniles are usually streetwise enough after a few starts, and Kevin Stott is an eye-catching booking in a race where professionalism could be decisive over a sharp 5f. At 8/11 she is no giveaway, but she is hard to oppose against rivals who are largely guessing games. Bet: WIN

2. Enhancing – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rowan Scott | Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Form: 8 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 63

For the each-way angle, Enhancing makes more appeal than the complete debutantes because she has at least had a look at the job and posted a fair enough figure in the process. The bare form of that eighth does not leap off the page, but a 69 rating and 63 Topspeed suggest she did not run as badly as the placing implies. Drawn in stall 1 and trained by Hugo Palmer, she is the type to step forward from first to second start, especially in a race lacking depth behind the favourite. Available at 5/1, she looks the sensible each-way punt to chase home Silesia. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Silesia is the obvious win bet and the one with the fewest questions to answer. If you want to play around the favourite, Enhancing is the each-way option at a workable price in a race where experience may count for plenty. Love Tanya and Ruby Moon are the interesting dangers on debut, but they are being backed on potential rather than substance.

15:00 – Download The Oddschecker App EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands C/D) (Qualifier) (GBB Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly informative restricted maiden rather than a weak one, with the market understandably latching on to the two runners who have already shown their hand. Social Spirit sets the standard on what we have seen, arriving with figures of 3 and 5 and a solid enough mark of 77, while Ricky Punting has had three goes and brings race fitness plus a useful Topspeed figure of 71. Mrs Mole also showed ability when fourth on debut and is one of the more interesting lighter-weight runners. The unknowns are headed by Platinum Force and Mia Fantasia, both from yards well capable of readying a 2yo first time, so this is not a race to take short odds blindly. Even so, proven form over this trip on quick ground may well count for plenty at Carlisle.

Top Selections

1. Social Spirit – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Billy Garritty | Trainer: Michael & David Easterby | Form: 35 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 68

Social Spirit is the obvious one, but not just because the market says so. He has already posted the best rating in the field, shaped with promise when third on debut and backed that up with another respectable effort when fifth. In a race where several likely rivals are guessing games first time out, that level of form gives him a proper edge. The Easterby yard knows the local scene inside out and Billy Garritty is a good fit around here on sharp juveniles. At 11/8 he is no giveaway, but he is the one with the clearest credentials and holds strong claims of getting this done. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Mrs Mole – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: Steph Hollinshead | Form: 4 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 44

Mrs Mole appeals as the each-way play in a race where the market may be underestimating the value of debut experience. She was fourth on her first start, which is often the run that teaches these juveniles plenty, and she receives weight from the colts as a filly carrying just 125. Her mark of 72 leaves her with a bit to find on bare figures with Social Spirit, but not a mountain, and improvement from first to second outing is entirely plausible. Clifford Lee is a positive booking and the 10/1 on offer makes her far more interesting than some of the untested types shorter in the betting. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Social Spirit is the straight win play because he brings the strongest established form and sets the standard on both rating and experience. For an each-way punt, Mrs Mole makes more appeal than the debutants at the prices, with natural improvement likely after her opening fourth. The main dangers are Platinum Force and Mia Fantasia, while Ricky Punting is solid enough if you want a safer place contender.

15:30 – Lady Dacre Bell Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Carlisle handicap rather than a race to get carried away with, and the mix of exposed older sprinters-milers and unexposed 3yos makes it a fair puzzle. Runswick arrives with the obvious profile after shaping well on his last two starts, while Barley is the battle-hardened course type who keeps knocking on the door. Geo is in good heart too and clearly has plenty of supporters, whereas Harswell Ruby has the figures to get involved if things fall right from stall 3. The 3yos get weight and that could be crucial over this sharp 7f, especially on quick ground. It doesn’t look an especially deep Class 4, but it is competitive, and tactical positioning plus a clean trip should decide plenty.

Top Selections

1. Runswick – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Ed Dunlop | Form: 610-32 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 61

Runswick makes plenty of appeal as a 3yo still learning his job and he looks the one with the most persuasive upside in the field. His last two runs read well enough for a race like this, especially the latest second, and an opening mark in the high 70s does not look beyond him if he gets a decent pace to aim at. Daniel Tudhope is an eye-catching booking and this yard can place one to good effect in northern handicaps. At 4/1, he is not hiding from the market, but that price still feels fair given the likelihood there is more to come over 7f. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Pension Pot – 14/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: William Pyle | Trainer: David & Nicola Barron | Form: 24-573 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 70

Pension Pot is the sort who could easily outrun his price if this drops right from stall 1. He is not thrown in, but that latest third suggested he is edging back towards a workable level and his overall profile is more solid than the double-digit odds imply. The Barron team are always worth respecting in these northern handicaps, and William Pyle knows how to deliver one late off a low weight. He does need things to fall into place and he lacks the sexy profile of the younger horses, but 14/1 is big enough to tempt each-way players in an 11-runner race with three places on offer. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Runswick is the win play and looks the most likely improver in the line-up. For each-way purposes, Pension Pot makes more appeal than some shorter-priced rivals because his draw, current mark and price all work in his favour. The obvious dangers are Barley, who is admirably consistent, and Geo, who comes here in good form and won’t need much more to feature.

16:02 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Eternal Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies)

Race Details: 6f | Class 1 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper little Listed sprint for fillies, with a solid mix of exposed pattern form and a couple still open to improvement. Albaydaa brings the most obvious upward profile after finally getting her head back in front and she looks the one they all have to beat if progressing again. Ellusive Butterfly sets the standard on official figures after a smart latest win and is clearly a major player, while Golden Palace has been keeping better company than most and could be dangerous from the inside draw. Stimulative Trip is harder to pin down after two underwhelming runs this season, but she has enough ability to feature if bouncing back. It is not an impossible puzzle, but there is enough depth here to make price and race position matter.

Top Selections

1. Albaydaa – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 21-321 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 90

She appeals as the most likely winner because her profile still points forward rather than sideways. That latest success came off the back of a string of good efforts, and the 21-321 form line suggests she has been holding her level well before deservedly converting. A Topspeed of 90 is right up to winning this, and Haggas-trained fillies in this sort of race are rarely here for the scenery. Tom Marquand is an ideal booking for a tactical 6f contest and, at 13/8, she is short enough to demand respect but not so cramped that you have to look elsewhere on principle. She is the percentage call. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Golden Palace – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Barry McHugh | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 765-73 | Rating: 109 | Topspeed: 85

Golden Palace looks the each-way value in a race where a few of these are priced more on potential than substance. She has a lofty mark of 109, which tells you the ability is there, and her last two runs hint that she is moving back towards her best after a quiet spell. The draw in stall 1 could be a plus if she gets a smooth tow into it, and this track can reward those who hold position rather than circle wide. At 11/2 she makes more appeal than some of the bigger names because she has already shown she belongs in stronger company than the bare form figures might suggest. Solid each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Albaydaa is the win play and makes most appeal as the progressive filly in the line-up. Golden Palace is the each-way option at 11/2, with enough class to hit the frame and possibly better if the race falls right. Ellusive Butterfly is the obvious danger on ratings, while Stimulative Trip is the one who could outrun her price if returning to last year’s promise.

16:35 – Stablemate By Agma Carlisle Bell Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Carlisle handicap: a big field, plenty of old hands, and several arriving with bits of form that make them interesting without making the picture especially tidy. Altareq has been knocking on the door for a while, Priapos comes here after getting back on the scoresheet, while Leadenhall arrives in winning form despite a wide draw. The lower-weight brigade are dangerous too, with Financer looking well treated on old form and Swift Salian running with real consistency. Draw and track position could matter over this 7f, and in a race full of exposed types, I’d rather side with those either still edging forward or now looking fairly handicapped again. Tricky, yes, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Priapos – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam James | Trainer: Phillip Makin | Form: 12-741 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 79

Priapos makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many come here looking especially well ahead of the assessor. He returned to winning ways last time and that form string of 12-741 suggests a horse who has been holding his level well all season before cashing in. A mark of 88 still looks workable, and stall 4 is no bad place to operate from if Sam James can get him into a smooth rhythm early. He’s not thrown in, but he is solid, arrives in form, and 15/2 looks fair rather than cramped in a field where several shorter-priced rivals have questions of their own. Bet type: WIN.

Bet: WIN

2. Financer – 9/1 with Betfair

Jockey: David Allan | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 0-4045 | Rating: 95 | Topspeed: 83

Financer is the each-way play because he’s better than a bare read of his recent figures might suggest. He has been competing off a high enough mark, but this race gives him a chance to get involved from a light weight of 130, and his Topspeed figure of 83 stacks up well in this field. There’s enough in those recent runs to think he’s not far away, and Tim Easterby’s pair both deserve respect here. At 9/1, with five places on offer, he looks the kind of hardened handicapper who can travel into the race and stick around when some of these cry enough. That makes him a very workable each-way punt. Bet type: EACH-WAY.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Priapos is the straightforward win angle after that latest success, with a handy draw and a mark that still gives him room to be competitive. Financer is the each-way option at 9/1, chiefly because his weight and speed figures give him a solid place chance in a 17-runner field. Altareq and Leadenhall look the obvious dangers, while Swift Salian is another for place players to consider.

17:05 – Stablemate By Agma Cumberland Plate Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper midweek handicap rather than a penalty kick, even if the market has latched firmly on to Wine Dark Sea. Harry Charlton’s 4yo comes here off a win and is clearly the one they all have to beat, but he meets a few unexposed and in-form rivals in a 12-runner field where the 3yos get handy weight. Dunkeld Dreamer arrives on the back of two wins in three starts, Gaelic Approach has been admirably consistent, and Alpine Sierra is on a notable hat-trick of hat-tricks run with three straight victories. There are seasoned handicappers like Trojan Sun and Wanderlust lurking too, so this looks competitive enough. The likely difference-maker is whether the favourite is ahead of his mark, or whether one of the lighter-weight improvers can pick him off late.

Top Selections

1. Wine Dark Sea – 5/4 with William Hill

Jockey: Lewis Edmunds | Trainer: Harry Charlton | Form: 5162-1 | Rating: 91 | Topspeed: 78

He’s short, no question, but it’s not hard to see why. Wine Dark Sea returned from a break to win last time and did it in the style of a horse who still has more to offer at this sort of trip. A mark of 91 asks another question, yet he’s a lightly raced 4yo from a yard that places them sensibly, and his profile is far more convincing than plenty of these exposed handicappers. Lewis Edmunds should be able to get a smooth position from stall 5, and if this turns into a test of class rather than grit, he may simply have the best turn of foot in the line-up. At 5/4, he’s short but still the most likely winner. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Gaelic Approach – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: -21213 | Rating: 89 | Topspeed: 75

For an each-way play, Gaelic Approach makes plenty of appeal at the prices. He’s a solid, progressive 3yo who has been holding his form really well, with that recent sequence of 2-1-2-1-3 suggesting he turns up and runs his race more often than not. The key here is the weight: just 121 against older rivals, and Johnston’s horses are often seen to good effect when allowed to roll forward and make it a proper test. Connor Beasley is a positive booking for a race like this around Carlisle. He doesn’t have to improve much on what he’s already shown to hit the frame, and 7/1 looks fair for a horse with such a dependable profile. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Wine Dark Sea is the percentage call and the one to side with for the win, even at a restrictive price. For those wanting a bit more juice, Gaelic Approach is the each-way angle with his low weight and reliable 3yo form. The obvious dangers are Dunkeld Dreamer, another progressive 3yo, and Alpine Sierra, whose winning run demands respect despite a wider draw.

17:35 – Racing Staff Week Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: 7.2) (watering) (Good to firm (goingstick) | | flat

This doesn’t look a deep Class 4, but it is a tight little fillies’ handicap with two unexposed 3yos dominating the market and probably with good reason. Shushu arrives off a straightforward win and still has the look of one with more to come for Roger Varian, while Nanoscience has already put together a more solid body of work and comes here on the back of a second success from four starts. Donna Nook is the obvious older filly to give them something to think about after scoring last time, but she’s conceding weight to younger legs. Rogue Attraction is interesting on her return, though the absence asks a question, and the others need to bounce back. In truth, this looks a race likely decided by which of the progressive 3yos takes another step forward.

Top Selections

1. Nanoscience – 15/8 with Bet365

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 53-131 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 67

Nanoscience is the one I want on side. She’s already achieved a fair bit in just four starts, her form figures are rock-solid, and that latest win suggests she’s still progressing rather than bumping into a ceiling. A mark of 90 asks another question, but in a race where some of the opposition are either exposed or returning from time away, I’d rather trust the filly arriving in form and getting plenty of weight. Andrew Balding’s 3yos are often well placed in these northern raids and P J McDonald looks a sensible booking. At 15/8 with Bet365, she isn’t exactly hidden, but she still makes the most appeal. 2. Donna Nook – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: David O’Meara | Form: 332941 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 81

Donna Nook looks the each-way angle in a race where the market is heavily focused on the 3yos. She comes here after getting her head back in front, and her recent form reads well enough in the context of this modest six-runner contest. The topspeed figure of 81 is the best in the field, which at least tells you she has the raw pace for a sharp 6f, and Daniel Tudhope aboard for David O’Meara is never a pairing to dismiss at Carlisle. She does have to give weight to the younger fillies, which is the obvious concern, but 13/2 with Bet365 is fair compensation if you think experience counts late on. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Nanoscience is the percentage call and the win bet. She brings the strongest recent profile and still looks on the upgrade. For an each-way punt, Donna Nook makes more sense than chasing the shorter prices behind the favourite, especially with two places on offer. Shushu is the clear danger if improving again, while Rogue Attraction is the lurker if fit enough after the break.
