Three courses are set to host cards in Britain and Ireland on Sunday, with GG’s Lucky 15 tips focusing on the English meetings from Carlisle and Southwell.
GG tipster Joe Napier has picked out four best bets at the two British tracks going racing throughout Sunday afternoon, including in the Pertemps qualifier from Carlisle, which could have a bearing on the Cheltenham Festival.
Southwell Racing Tips (Sunday 14 December)
Seven races take place at Southwell on Sunday afternoon with each-way bettors guaranteed three places in five of the seven races on a competitive card.
1.00 Southwell – Groovy Blue (1pt win – )
After making a highly promising chase debut at Sedgefield at the start of November, Groovy Blue is taken to build on that record a first success over fences for Ben Pauling and Ben Jones. The six-year-old took a long time to get to grips with hurdles having won a bumper on his debut for the yard, but eventually gained some consistency to conclude last season, then returned with a close third when met with fences. The winner and runner-up have both won since and the selection was right on their tails, so should be winning before long now that he has learned his job.
1.30 Southwell – Shade Of Winter (1pt win – )
The experience of Shade Of Winter can prove a significant positive for Evan Williams’ charge in this maiden hurdle. The five-year-old has failed to get his head in front under any National Hunt code yet, but was placed on all three hurdles starts last term, including when second to subsequent Grade 1 winner Julius Des Pictons at Chepstow on Welsh National day last season. He travelled best next time out at that same track when possibly outstayed over 2m3½f, but a bare 2m on ground softer than good should suit and he is worth forgiving his comeback in a competitive novices’ handicap at Cheltenham.
Carlisle Racing Tips (Sunday 14 December)
There is a Pertemps Final qualifier for the Cheltenham Festival among Carlisle’s seven races on Sunday, with one of our two tips from the venue coming in that contest.
1.10 Carlisle – Kent De Thaix (1pt win – )
Though his form figures do not stack up well on a bare first glance, Kent De Thaix has run well on both his hurdles starts, most notably last time out at Newcastle. The two-time point-to-point winner was only tenth on his rules debut at Ayr in November, but looked set to play a significant part in the finish until clouting the third last flight, only to then step forward and run a big race at 66/1 behind the 135-rated Zanndabad at Newcastle. He finished in front of the 115-rated Lost Frequencies that day over 2m6f, potentially failing to see out the extended 2m6f trip, but only finishing three lengths out of a place. In this easier contest over three furlongs shorter, he looks to have the ability to win a race of this nature.
1.40 Carlisle – Roaring Conquest (1pt win – 5/2)
Olly Murphy won this race 12 months ago and looks to have a similar type in Roaring Conquest who can guarantee himself a run in the Cheltenham Festival Pertemps Final. The selection proved his 3m stamina in the point field before competing in strong maiden hurdles last winter, finishing a close fourth to the useful Derryhassen Paddy, then winning comfortably at Lingfield. A third place followed in the Grade 2 River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock before a lower effort in Listed company at Perth, but that latter contest was unusually strong due to the battle for the trainers’ championship, and he returned with a gutsy win at Windsor where he and the runner-up pulled clear. He has a 5lb rise to contend with, but looks capable of defying that.
