Midweek days of racing do not come much busier than Thursday. All six meetings have at least seven races taking place.
GG tipster Joe Napier is on hand for our lucky 15 tips on the day. He has selections at both Catterick and Musselburgh.
Catterick Racing Tips (Thursday 21 May)
Seven races take place at Yorkshire track Catterick on Thursday. Joe’s two tips both run in handicap company.
3.10 Catterick – Safari Dream (1pt win – 5/2)
Allowed to run off the same mark he won off seven days ago, Safari Dream should be winning again. The six-year-old had been winless in 11 months prior to his victory at Salisbury. When he does win though, he tends to do it in clusters. His other six wins have been recorded in two separate hat-trick spells. One of those was last season, including a win at Salisbruy backed up elsewhere. He should have no issue running again one week on. The son of Bungleinthejungle has never run at Catterick, but that should be no issue, while Jake Dickson, who rode him to success a week ago on his first experience with the selection, gets to claim 7lb this time too. Plenty is stacked in his favour.
3.40 Catterick – Analogical (1pt win – 3/1)
Since running in maiden and novice company over trips too short, Analogical has finished outside the first three just once in nine starts. Sir Mark Prescott immediately upped him in trip for handicap races. He won on debut in such company at Beverley last year. However, unlike some of Prescott’s, is not the most thorough stayer. His three wins have all been over 1m4f, winning none of his four races over 1m6f+. The gelding’s latest win at Newcastle was over 1m4f in April and was dominant enough to suggest he has more victories in him soon. His other two wins have come on turf, so there is no issue with the return to grass here. The drop in distance, with Poppy Scott removing 7lb, should help him travel better and get back to winning ways.
Musselburgh Racing Tips (Thursday 21 May)
There is class 2 action on Musselburgh’s card on Thursday, but it is in the lower reaches where we have picked out our two top tips.
3.20 Musselburgh – Whernside (1pt win – 15/8)
Blakefell has run in the more competitive races, but Whernside has just as much upside in this maiden. A son of National Stud sire Lope Y Fernandez, he has been second on his most recent two runs. They were both in novice company at Newcastle and Redcar respectively. His second last time out, saw him split horses already rated 77 and 85, suggesting that was strong enough form for one of less experience. He remains at 7f here despite shaping like further may suit. However, against rivals who mostly possess weaker form, and with a fitness edge over the one who can challenge him in that respect, he looks the one to beat.
5.00 Musselburgh – Spirit Catcher (1pt win – 10/3)
If still fit from running four days ago, Spirit Catcher looks a lively type to win Musselburgh’s penultimate Thursday contest. The seven-year-old has been campaigned at 1m for much of his career. However, last season, Phil Kirby experimented with racing him over 1m2f, initially with poor results. He was back at 1m to start 2026, but won at this track at the end of April over 1m1f. Then, at Ripon on Sunday, he was second of 11 back up to 1m2f. He was staying on well at the finish too. He boasts a similar profile as market rival Alpine Sierra did when he was upped in trip to win last time out. Overall, Kirby’s charge remains on a very low rating compared to his best. He also clearly retains enough ability to be competitive and there is enough stamina in his pedigree for 1m4½f.
