Cheltenham Festival Previews - Brown Advisory Novices Chase (Daryl Carter)

The 3mile Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase was landed in impressive style by Monkfish 12 months ago and this season’s renewal promises to be a blockbuster with some top names entered. Daryl Carter has previewed this competitive contest alongside an exclusive 888sport sign-up offer of Bet £10 – Get £45 Sign-up offer.

We could be in for a right treat here in the Brown Advisory Novice Chase (RSA) so let’s get cracking!

Key Stats and Trends

  • Nine of the last 12 winners have been aged seven – six-year-olds have a poor record.

  • Eight of the last 12 winners were in the top three of the betting.

  • Eleven of the last 12 winners had at least one previous run at Cheltenham. Seven of the last 12 had a Cheltenham win to their name.

  • Nine of the last 12 had won a Grade 1 race.

  • Eleven of the last 12 were rated 145 plus.

  • Ten of the last 12 had at least two previous runs over 23-25 furlongs.

  • Fury Road, Bravemansgame are the only two that fit these stats.

The Likely Contenders

GALOPIN DES CHAMPS

Galopin Des Champs looks out of the ordinary after demolishing his rivals at Leopardstown at the Dublin Racing Festival. That particular race has an excellent record in this contest, and he would be a danger to all if turning up. Despite his six-year-old age, he may be good enough to defy that stat, but there are a few others he needs to withstand also. The Turners looks like the right race for him, but he will be a very short-price and worthy favourite if he shows up here.

BRAVEMANSGAME

Bravemansgame has done nothing wrong over fences and has looked impressive on one or two occasions, including when taking the scalp of Ahoy Senor at Kempton in the Kauto Star. Still, Kempton’s 3m trip is a world away from a stiff 3m 1/2f test at Cheltenham, and I still have doubts about his stamina.

It’s also hard to get away from how easily he was brushed aside over 2m5f in the Ballymore Novice Hurdle at Cheltenham last term, which may be an indication that the British are miles behind the Irish. I have found it hard to warm to him for whatever reason. Still, he jumps well and looks a better chaser than a hurdler, and he holds valid claims.

AHOY SENOR

Ahoy Senor has been extremely impressive, including the latest at Wetherby, where his jumping was much improved. He has a sizeable engine, so much, so connections are pondering with the idea of running in the Gold Cup.

He has impressed me, and although he lacks that all-important course form, he must be considered a big player. If this race cuts up – which it could quite easily do – he may be able to dominate this race from the front, and that would give him a huge chance.

The undulating nature of the track and the stiff fences (including downhill) could cause him problems, but the smaller the field, the better his chances. He is an on the day play if you’re a fan of his.

L’HOMME PRESSE

L’Homme Presse would be fascinating should he run here instead of the Turners, with this 3m trip likely to bring out further improvement. He has progressed at knots over fences and will arrive off the back of the perfect prep at Sandown.

He has course experience with an excellent win here on New Years Day and is a very assured jumper. He ticks plenty of boxes should he swerve the potential clash with Bob Olinger and Galopin Des Champs in the Turners.

JUNGLE BOOGIE

Eight-year-old Jungle Boogie is a potential candidate but quickly needs more experience after just the one run at the time of writing. He looks an out and out stayer and is a different type to Ahoy Senor and L’Homme Presse but could be equally as talented. His excellent debut chase win on seasonal return was given a minor boost when the second and third ran well next time, the former in the Thyestes handicap finishing fourth. He is interesting, to say the least.

FURY ROAD

After his latest defeat at Leopardstown to Galopin Des Champs, Fury Road is hard to trust and must be frustrating for connections, yet he was travelling well before a bad error saw his chances all but gone. He bolted up on his penultimate start to make him a very worthy candidate for this contest, and his Albert Bartlett third in 2020 is also in the back of the mind. On a going day, he has the class to be involved in the shakeup.

Of the remainder, they are good, but they are not great and in that category is Stattler, Run Wild Fred, Beacon Edge, Threeunderthrufive and Dusart, who all need considerably more.

Verdict

Perhaps waiting until the day of or at least further indication of where Galopin Des Champs will go clear these murky waters. Still, L’Homme Presse interests me should he tackle this route, and I have not given up on Fury Road either, who could throw up a surprise. Ahoy Senor is of interest should the field reduce significantly and get a soft lead. Unfortunately, I am none the wiser at this moment in time.
