We head into Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival, with our tipping expert, Daryl Carter bringing eight selections for Thursday’s card, which features the Ryanair Chase and the Paddy Power Stayers Hurdle. SIRE DU BERLAIS – (2.10 Cheltenham – 2.5pts each-way, 6/1) (7 places, Paddy Power, Bet365, Betfair 6 places William Hill, Coral)
SIRE DU BERLAIS has outstanding claims for this contest which doesn’t look as strong as recent renewals, and a third win in this race looks on the cards. He has campaigned for another crack at this contest since finishing second in the Stayers Hurdle, beaten just three lengths by the 164 rated Flooring Porter last season, and if the pair were to meet in this scenario, he would be in receipt of 15lbs in weight inclusive of jockey Rob James claim.
Sire Du Berlais won this race off 145 in 2019, 152 in 2020 and today effectively runs off 149. He is extremely lightly raced for his age, and he loves Cheltenham with form figures of 2114 in his career. Gordon Elliott prepped him for this, in the same manner he did in 2020 by qualifying at Warwick under an easy ride from Tom Scudamore. Prior to that, he was a good second on seasonal return behind Darasso when giving him five pounds. Darasso is a rock-solid 150 horse, and that came over a trip of 2m4f – too sharp for Sire Du Berlais.
He can easily be forgiven for his run at Leopardstown behind Klassical Dream given he has never been at his best at that venue. Sire Du Berlais won this race in first-time cheek-pieces in 2019 and then first-time blinkers in 2020, and it’s interesting that connections switched out his blinkers at Warwick for cheek-pieces and now switch back to blinkers to give him a fresh edge. He has to go close here, and with bookies paying seven places he must go close.

BORN PATRIOT – (2.10 Cheltenham – 0.5pt each-way, 18/1) (7 places, Paddy Power, Bet365, Betfair 6 places William Hill, Coral)
BORN PATRIOT has caught my eye all season, and he can fill the places behind the above mentioned at big odds. He has been crying out for a strong run three miles, which he has only had once in his career and came here behind Kansas City in October. He powered up the hill off 3lbs lower, and today’s scenario should suit him well. He could prove better than this handicap mark and should have no trouble running on for place money.

JANIDIL – (2.50 Cheltenham – 2pts each-way, 12/1) (3 places)
JANIDIL’S price is simply too high here, given he only has two lengths to find with favourite Allaho on their meeting in the John Durkan when he was making his seasonal return and caught at the rear off a steady gallop. Connections have tried him over three miles the next twice, where he has run with extreme credit but failed to stay the trip. He will get a strong pace to aim at today, and this distance is perfect for him.
He loomed up here in the Albert Bartlett behind Monkfish a few years back but got denied a clear run and failed to stay the 3m trip. He is unexposed and is improving, and things could fall right for him today. There is no chance that Shan Blue should be a shorter price than him given Janidil is rated 16lbs higher and has his ideal conditions. He is a big each-way price here.

CELEBRE D’ALLEN – (4.10 Cheltenham – 1pt win, 5/1) (6 places Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair 7 Skybet)
CELEBRE D’ALLEN has been targeted at this race, and he looks on a very fair handicap mark on the evidence of his latest cosy win at Warwick, and the fifth has recently boosted that form for this column. He is fast on the upgrade and not your typical ten-year-old. He has high-class French form and looks the ideal type for one of these big field handicaps.

STOLEN SILVER – (4.10 Cheltenham – 0.5pt each-way, 25/1) (6 places Bet365, Paddy Power, Betfair 7 Skybet)
STOLEN SILVER has been the forgotten horse in this contest and looks a big each-way price given he run here over 2m behind Editeur Du Gite three starts back, given that one is now 13lbs higher in the handicap.
He has been crying out for this 2m4f trip for some time, and his latest two starts on deep ground and in Grade 1 company are easily forgiven. Back on a sounder surface off a break he could go extremely close.

BRANDY LOVE – (4.50 Cheltenham – 1pt win, 9/2)
BRANDY LOVE maybe a fruitcake when going right-handed, but both of her strange runs have come at Fairyhouse, and she has been good away from that venue. She did remarkably well to get as close as she did to Allegorie Vassy in that contest, suggesting that her engine is sizeable.
She could get the run of the race here, and going back left-handed is a huge and obvious positive. She has been highly touted by the yard for some time, and she could just be out of the ordinary.

MISTER COFFEY – (5.30 Cheltenham – 0.5pt each-way, 16/1) (6 places Bet365, Skybet, Paddy Power, Unibet, Betfred, 5 places William Hill, Betfair)
MISTER COFFEY has been screaming, absolutely screaming to go up in distance, and connections will take plenty of encouragement about the way he stuck to the task at Sandown behind L’Homme Presse after banking a fence. He has an abundance of talent, and his handicap mark of 137 looks well within reach on that evidence.
He has improved with every run over fences, with his jumping becoming more accurate since the removal of the hood. He has the ability to rate much higher than this over fences, for which he looks tailor-made, and he gets the first vote.

SCHOOL BOY HOURS – (5.30 Cheltenham – 0.5pt each-way, 6/1) (6 places Bet365, Skybet, Paddy Power, Unibet, Betfred, 5 places William Hill, Betfair)
Second is for SCHOOL BOY HOURS, who looks like a strong stayer and arrives here on the back of a victory at Leopardstown at Christmas, and that race has worked out extremely well. Coming here fresh looks to be by design and some of his form looks extremely strong for a handicap mark of 142.
