There is only one place to start with Saturday’s racing and that is with Cheltenham, with eight races on a superb Trials Day card. The results at Prestbury Park will be worth heeding with a view to the Festival in march.
Andrew Mount looks only at the Cheltenham card on Saturday, with all four of his selections running on Trials Day.
Cheltenham Racing Tips (Saturday 24 January 2026)
Cheltenham’s Trials Day card boasts five Grade 2 trials for the big events at the Cheltenham Festival in six weeks time, as well as three ultra competitive handicaps. Andrew has selections in all of those latter contests, as well as one to cause an upset in the Cleeve Hurdle.
12.05 Cheltenham- Push The Button (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
The higher-weighted runners have a good recent record in the Timeform Novices’ Handicap Chase, with seven of the last ten winners coming from the top three in the weights. Backing all 32 qualifiers returned a profit of £20.75 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£37.99 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). A solid recent run has also been a good pointer, with the last ten winners arriving here on the back of a top-three effort. Combining these two angles would have found seven winners from 23 bets (+£29.75 SP, +£40.33 BSP) and Push The Button is the pick of this year’s two qualifiers (Califet En Vol is the other). Mark Walford’s top weight has improved since switched to fences for his new yard this season, scoring at Carlisle before runner-up efforts at Wetherby/Ascot. He had good form over hurdles here for Nigel Twiston-Davies, including a Cheltenham Festival sixth of 24 to Wodhooh in last season’s Martin Pipe and the form of his Ascot second to Steel Ally was franked when third-placed No Questions Asked won in Grade 2 company next time. I’ve saved on Califet En Vol.
1.15 Cheltenham – Donnacha (1pt e/w – 12/1 general, bet365 paying four places)
Donnacha needs it like a swamp and his four-length second to Lunar Discovery over the extended 2m3f trip at Chepstow last month was a cracking effort as the ground, officially good to soft, was good to firm according to Proform’s Going Adjustment. Nigel Hawke’s seven-year-old, who carried top weight of 12-00 in that handicap chase, now has form figures on good to soft or faster going (based on race times, not the official verdict) of 3343334322 (0-10). On soft or heavy ground his record stands at 12102111 (5-8) for a profit of £11.00. The six slowest surfaces he has encountered have produced form figures of 121111 (5-6), with the runner-up effort at 12-1, and the rain has arrived in time. I put him up at 20-1 on GG’s Weekend Watch on Thursday but there’s still plenty of juice in the price.
1.50 Cheltenham – Latenightpass (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 bet365, five places)
Having had something of a downer on the cross-country chase when we discussed it on Weekend Watch I’ve gone full circle and decided to have a bet on veteran Latenightpass thanks to the very soft conditions. His record on genuinely soft or heavy going, below Grade 1 company, stands at 1112 (3-4), with the wins at 40-1, 11-1 and 7-2 and the second place coming over course and distance at 9-2. He was only seventh of 14 over track and trip last month but the ground was much faster than ideal, and he reportedly lost a shoe.
3.35 Cheltenham – Gowel Road (0.5pt e/w – 12.1 generally)
Pace angle Gowel Road wont his race on soft going last season and will be happier back over this 3m trip after his 28-1 fourth to the progressive Kabral Du Mathan over 2m4f on New Year’s Day (the ground was quicker than he prefers too). The Twiston-Davies’ ten-year-old has a good record in the January-February period – form figures of 11234214 (3-8) – and his ability to cope with heavy conditions could see him render he official ratings (he’s rated 14lb inferior t Impose Toi but carries the same weight) redundant.
