The final week of May means that summer is nearly here, bringing with it some of the biggest flat racing festivals. For the final Friday in spring, six tracks host racing as the weekend approaches.
Joe Napier provides our Lucky 15 tips for the day. He has two selections each from Chepstow and Brighton for you to follow.
Chepstow Racing Tips (Friday 29 May)
Across Chepstow’s seven-race card, we have two tips running in the second and penultimate races.
2.30 Chepstow – Regulus Black (1pt win – 11/8)
Only a small handful have solid form figures in this class 6 handicap. The only one without a serious blot though is Regulus Black. Hugo Palmer’s runners have been going well of late, with three winners from his last eight. His charge here had form of 455 in novice and maiden events, not troubling the judge. However, his handicap debut was better, seeing him finish third of nine at Beverley over this trip. He went off favourite that day, so the result was slightly underwhelming. However, his popularity in the market suggests he should be able to rate better. He was strong through the finish, should now have learned plenty, and his evident stamina may be utilised better here.
4.40 Chepstow – Quisana (1pt win – 7/2)
Royal runner Food For Thought will be popular. However, on his yearly return, he is passed over in favour of Quisana for Eve Johnson Houghton. The daughter of Ghaiyyath went off at 40/1 at Windsor earlier this month for her first start. She acquitted herself well, finishing strongly under only hands and heels riding by Charles Bishop. Her fourth of ten hinted she could win at this level before requiring handicappers. The drop to 7f does not look the most natural move given she saw out 1m strongly, but she has race fitness on her side and did not look short of pace at the Berkshire track.
Brighton Racing Tips (Friday 29 May)
Our two lucky 15 tips at Brighton on Friday run in the second and third contests on the south coast.
2.50 Brighton – Terry O (1pt win – 5/2)
The three debutants could be anything, but Terry O has run two good races already. Form of 45 in double-figure fields may make him tough to beat here against just five rivals. The son of Aclaim has looked talented but quirky, running keenly on both starts this far. He collided with the rail on debut at Bath, but saw out that race, as well as his second at Windsor, really strongly. He remains at 6f which looks a good move and his racecourse experience can hopefully make the difference.
3.20 Brighton – Gallant Lion (1pt win – 7/1)
Two runs this year from Gallant Lion look to have been aimed at bringing him back to form. His conclusion to 2025 was disappointing, but he was largely competitive off marks in the low 70s last summer and could be thrown in here with a rating of 66. The six-year-old is 1lb below his last winning mark from Chepstow at this time last year. He has since placed on three occasions before fading to end the previous campaign. A step up in trip coupled with a run on heavy ground and having raced regularly from April onwards likely combined to see him tire by October. However, after a decent hurdling debut, he ran over just 1m at Southwell. That has seen him go down another 2lb in the handicap and 1m4f suits him much better here. His recent campaigning can pay dividends.
