The second day of Chester‘s May Meeting takes place on Thursday. The ITV cameras will be there to capture the first five of those on terrestrial TV.
Matty Sutcliffe is providing his best bets for the entire meeting at Chester. Here are his top tips for day two.
Chester Racing Tips (Thursday 7 May)
The Group 3 Ormonde Stakes is the feature race on day two at Chester. Matty has a selection i that race, as well as two more on the Roodee.
1:30 Chester – CAA Stellar Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-100) – Ruby’s Profit 13/2 1pt WIN
Prominent racer Ruby’s Profit was never going for figure when slowly away in a first time hood, now discarded, at Bath just three days ago but she still stayed on credibly to be beaten a length and if backing up quickly here she’s of major interest from stall two at a track she’s previously ran well at.
The daughter of Profitable was second here off 3lbs lower last season at this meeting beaten a length by the well backed favourite, who was later beaten a length at Royal Ascot and that pair pulled clear of the third who in turn went close in the 3yo Dash at Epsom next time out.
She largely held her form well subsequently, making all to win at Goodwood off 3lbs higher next time out, before going close at Royal Ascot and then again at Glorious Goodwood from a mark of 93. She’s back down 6lbs now, and if she’s quicker out the blocks from this low draw then she could be tough to peg back if replicating her run here last season.
3:05 Chester – Ladbrokes Ormonde Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+) – Rahiebb 7/2 1pt WIN
There looks to an honest gallop on here with Al Qareem and Mount Atlas, and while the obvious answer would be to suggest this will set it up for one of the Coolmore pair, that will also suit Rahiebb who is closely matched with Illinois on collateral form.
The son of Frankel was wildly progressive last season, bumping into the subsequent King George V Stakes and Group 3 Gordon Stakes winner Merchant at York off 90, giving him 8lbs. He was beaten a length next time out in the Queen’s Vase, finishing ahead of Scandinavia, coming down the outside with the winner (subsequently second in the Great Voltigeur) having the benefit of the inside rail.
He failed to fire in the Gordon Stakes, but he got right back on track when a rallying second in the St Leger, beaten a neck by Scandinavia, a shorter distance than when the winner beat Illinois at Goodwood.
The Coolmore pair will be tough to pass, but it’s probable that we know where their ceiling lies whereas Rahiebb brings untapped potential into this four year old season. Drawn in stall one, he’s likely to get a strong toe into this contest and given he’s proven himself on a speedier track along with the fact his dam was a winner around here, he’s taken to top the Aidan O’Brien pair, whose better sorts have tended to need their first outings thus far.
3:40 Chester – Xenon Workplace Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-105) – King Of Thunder 8/1 1pt EW 4 places
King Of Thunder ran a race full of promise on debut at Ascot last July, staying on well to be beaten five lengths into fourth by the well backed Godolphin favourite Words Of Truth, who subsequently won the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes before finishing third in the valuable inaugural Two Year Old Conditions Stakes at Ascot on Champions Day.
In third there was the subsequent Horris Hill third now rated 96, and the second was subsequently fourth in the valuable Goffs Millions now rated 93. King Of Thunder had the highest stride frequency in the contest there, suggesting this track will play into his strengths.
Admittedly, he went backwards in two starts later, but after a gelding operation, he bounced back to form on handicap debut at Haydock getting up late in the day off top-weight. By Night Of Thunder out of a family that generally tends to improve with age, including seven time Group 1 winner Midday, he’s sure to come on again this season and a mark of 79, particularly judged on his debut run, could seriously underestimate him from a handy draw in stall four.
