13:30 – CAA Stellar Handicap
Race Details: 5f | Class 2 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
Chester’s opening five-furlong handicap is exactly the sort of sprint that can make fools of plenty, but it does look a proper race rather than a lottery. The non-runners take out a bit of pace and leave a tight, competitive field in which draw and early speed will be absolutely crucial round here. Roman Dragon is the obvious one to start with now dropped to a tempting racing weight from stall 3, while Seven Questions has the ideal inside berth and is easy to see running a big race for Robert Cowell. Canon’s House and Ruby’s Profit are lurking on workable marks, and Dapper Valley arrives in rude health, but this still feels like a contest where course position in the first furlong will decide plenty. Tricky, yes, but not impossible.
Top Selections
1. Roman Dragon – 3/1 with William Hill
Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Form: -05870 | Rating: 106 | Topspeed: 61
On bare recent form he comes with risks, but this is Chester, not a straight-track burn-up where you can recover from trouble. Stall 3 is a big plus, Oisin Murphy is exactly the man you want in a race like this, and Hugo Palmer knows what is required around here. Roman Dragon has been running in stronger company than this for much of his career and now finds himself carrying just 133 despite an official mark of 106. That makes him very interesting back in a sharp Class 2 handicap where tactical speed matters as much as raw figures. At 3/1 he is short enough, but he is still the one I find hardest to oppose.
Bet: WIN
2. Seven Questions – 7/1 with William Hill
Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: Robert Cowell | Form: 700-36 | Rating: 107 | Topspeed: 83
If you want an each-way play, Seven Questions makes plenty of appeal from the golden inside draw. A low five-furlong berth at Chester is worth its weight in gold when the gates open, and Tom Marquand should have every chance to hold a handy spot. His two runs this term have not been bad at all, particularly the third on reappearance, and there was enough in the latest sixth to suggest he is ready to strike in this grade. He is another who looks better treated than his recent finishing positions suggest, and Robert Cowell’s sprinters are never ignored lightly in these cavalry-charge handicaps. At 7/1, he looks the value each-way punt.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Roman Dragon is the win play: the draw, rider and easing weight all point to a bold showing. Seven Questions is the each-way alternative, with stall 1 giving him a major tactical edge and four places on offer. The main dangers are Canon’s House, who is handicapped to be involved, and Ruby’s Profit, while Dapper Valley is respected after recent wins but may find this deeper.

14:05 – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB/IRE Incentive Race)
Race Details: 5f | Class 2 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a proper sharp 2yo Chester maiden rather than a weak early-season scramble, and the draw will matter as much as raw ability over this bare 5f. Caturra Lights sets the standard on what we have seen, having already shaped well to finish third and earning a mark of 87, while Paper View and Undercover Affair also bring useful experience. Hugo Palmer throws plenty at it with Koodini, Donegal Rose and Jazz Queen, which is interesting on his home patch, and the market has taken note. Still, this is not a race to treat too confidently because several newcomers are housed in potentially handy berths and could know their job first time. Strong maiden, tricky puzzle, and probably one decided by gate speed and professionalism rather than a flashy late surge.
Top Selections
1. Caturra Lights – 7/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Mikey Sheehy | Trainer: Adrian Paul Keatley | Form: 3 | Rating: 87 | Topspeed: 54
He is the one with the standout piece of form and, in a race full of guesswork, that counts for plenty. An opening third is already more than most of these have managed, and an official mark of 87 is a fair standard for the others to aim at in an ordinary maiden, never mind around Chester where experience can be gold dust. Stall 6 is not perfect but it is workable if Mikey Sheehy gets him into stride, and this colt looks the type to be streetwise enough to hold a position. At 7/2, he is no giveaway, but he is still the percentage call and very much the one they all have to beat.
Bet: WIN
2. Koodini – 13/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Jason Watson | Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
For an each-way angle, Koodini makes plenty of appeal from stall 2 for a yard that targets Chester hard and knows exactly what sort is needed here. With no public form to inspect, you are buying into stable intent, track craft and a potentially ideal draw, but those are serious assets in a race like this. Jason Watson is a solid booking and, if this one breaks on terms, he should be able to hold a lovely pitch around the inside. Plenty of these have shown promise without screaming certainty, so 13/2 looks fair enough for a newcomer who could be naturally sharp and is drawn to make life difficult for the more exposed principals.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Caturra Lights is the win play because he brings the best established form and sets a clear standard. Koodini is the each-way punt from a prime low draw for a yard that excels at this track. The obvious dangers are Paper View, despite the awkward stall 11, and any one of the other Palmer runners if the market speaks loudly.

14:35 – Boodles Raindance Dee Stakes (Listed Race) (Colts & Geldings)
Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 1 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a tidy rather than vintage renewal of the Dee Stakes, but it is still a race with proper Derby-trial flavour because Constitution River brings the standout rating and the all-important Ballydoyle/Ryan Moore combination. He sets the standard on 123 and, if improving again from two to three, he is plainly the one they all have to beat. That said, Chester over this trip can ask awkward questions, especially in a six-runner tactical affair, and Morshdi appeals as the one most likely to make a race of it from stall 1 for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. Behind those two, the rest need to step forward sharply. Golden Story is interesting after just one run, while Shayem and Flushing Meadows already look a bit exposed at this level.
Top Selections
1. Constitution River – 8/11 with Bet365
Jockey: Ryan Moore | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: 211- | Rating: 123 | Topspeed: 80
He is the obvious starting point and, in truth, the right favourite. That 123 rating towers over this field, and a 2-1-1 profile from his three starts suggests a colt who learned his job quickly and finished his juvenile campaign on a sharp upward curve. Aidan O’Brien farms races of this type with unexposed middle-distance colts, and Ryan Moore on board only reinforces the point. The slight caveat is that Chester can turn tactical and he is drawn in 4 rather than parked on the rail, but class usually tells in these small Listed contests. At 8/11 he is no secret, just the most likely winner. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Morshdi – 11/4 with Bet365
Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 21-1 | Rating: 117 | Topspeed: 104
If anything is going to trouble the favourite, it may well be Morshdi. He has done little wrong in three starts, and that 21-1 sequence says progressive colt rather than finished article. The opening mark of 117 gives him something to find with Constitution River, but not an impossible amount, and stall 1 is a major plus around here if Marquand can control the fractions or secure a perfect stalking trip. Haggas is not one to tilt at races like this unless he feels the horse belongs, and Morshdi has the profile of one still improving with racing. At 11/4, he is the sensible each-way play in a race lacking depth. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Constitution River is hard to oppose on the figures and the stable angle, so he is the win bet. Morshdi is the clear alternative, with the inside draw giving him a tactical edge and making him the each-way option in this six-runner field. Golden Story is the one to note if the market speaks strongly, but the two principals look some way ahead on what they have shown.

15:05 – Ladbrokes Ormonde Stakes (Group 3)
Race Details: 1m 5f | Class 1 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a proper little Group 3 rather than a penalty kick, even if the market is understandably dominated by Jan Brueghel. A mark of 138 makes him the clear standard-setter and Aidan O’Brien also runs Illinois, who brings high-class staying form of his own, so the Ballydoyle pair give this race its shape. Rahiebb is the interesting alternative: unexposed compared to some of these and drawn in stall 1 around Chester, which is no small asset over this trip. Al Qareem arrives off a win and is tough as teak, while Sons And Lovers and Mount Atlas have enough ability to make things awkward if the tempo turns tactical. Strong race, but not an impossible puzzle if you’re willing to take on the obvious favourite at the prices.
Top Selections
1. Rahiebb – 4/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Ray Dawson | Trainer: Roger Varian | Form: 22342- | Rating: 131 | Topspeed: 128
Rahiebb is the one who appeals most as a win bet because he has fewer miles on the clock than several of these and his figures already put him right in the argument. A rating of 131 and a topspeed of 128 tell you he is operating at a proper level, and stall 1 is a major plus at Chester if he can hold position early. Varian’s 4-year-old ended last season running consistently well in good company without quite getting his head in front, but there is a sense his turn is near. At 4/1, he makes more appeal than the short-priced favourite in a race where track craft could be decisive. Bet: WIN
2. Al Qareem – 9/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: K R Burke | Form: 4313-1 | Rating: 127 | Topspeed: 116
Al Qareem is exactly the sort you want on side for an each-way punt in this race: battle-hardened, reliable and arriving here on the back of a win. Burke’s 7-year-old has a solid habit of turning up and running his race in better company than this, and while stall 8 is not ideal round Chester, his toughness and cruising speed should help offset it. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of Jan Brueghel or the untapped angle of Rahiebb, but he is very capable of nicking a place if the race gets tactical and scrappy. Around 9/1 looks fair for a horse with this level of proven class and consistency. Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Rahiebb is the main play at 4/1, with his inside draw and upward profile making him the standout value against the favourite. Al Qareem is the sensible each-way option at 9/1 in an eight-runner field, as he rarely runs badly and comes here match-fit. Jan Brueghel is the obvious danger on ratings and could simply prove too good, while Illinois is respected if fully tuned up.

15:40 – Xenon Workplace Handicap
Race Details: 7f | Class 2 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a proper Chester puzzle, and the draw will have plenty to say over this sharp 7f, but there is also a fair bit of substance to the form. McMurray arrives on a hat-trick after signing off last season with three straight wins and has the profile of a colt still ahead of his mark, while Factual is another upwardly mobile type after winning on his handicap debut. Strength Of Spirit brings solid figures and a big Topspeed number, and low draws make Monarch’s Gold, King Of Thunder and Gentle George easy enough to imagine running well round here. The flip side is that several of the market principals are posted wider than ideal, so this looks less a straightforward Class 2 and more one where tactical position and luck around the bends could decide everything.
Top Selections
1. McMurray – 7/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Billy Loughnane | Trainer: George Boughey | Form: 62111- | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 88
McMurray is the one I keep coming back to. He ended last year with three consecutive wins, and while this is a deeper handicap than the races he was contesting then, he looks exactly the sort of progressive 3yo who can keep climbing through the grades. Stall 5 is workable at Chester, his racing style ought to allow Billy Loughnane to hold a handy pitch, and Boughey has more than one dart here but this one makes the most appeal. An opening mark in the low 100s is no gimme, yet 7/2 still feels fair enough given the scope in his profile and the likelihood there is more to come. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. King Of Thunder – 15/2 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Ray Dawson | Trainer: Hugo Palmer | Form: 4601- | Rating: 102 | Topspeed: 62
For an each-way play, King Of Thunder makes plenty of sense from stall 4 for a yard that knows exactly how to target these Chester handicaps. He signed off his juvenile campaign with a win, gets in here with just 117lb, and the low draw is a major asset in a race where several better-fancied rivals are berthed wider. You are taking a small leap on his return and the bare Topspeed figure does not scream certainty, but this track can massively reward the right setup and he has one. At 15/2 with four places on offer, he looks the value each-way punt against some classier but less well-drawn opponents. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
McMurray is the win bet because he has the strongest progressive profile in the field and a draw that should let him race where it matters. King Of Thunder is the each-way alternative, mainly because stall 4 and a feather weight are serious assets round Chester. The obvious dangers are Factual, who is going the right way, and Strength Of Spirit, who brings strong figures and solid recent form.

16:10 – Halliwell Jones Handicap (GBBPlus Race)
Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 3 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a proper Chester handicap: big field, tight track, and a draw-and-position race as much as a straight test of ability. Jupiter Ammon heads the market and is easy enough to see why from stall 4 with Oisin Murphy booked, while Celeborn arrives with the sexy profile of an unexposed 4yo for George Boughey. But there are a few lurking dangers at prices. Londoner has the golden draw in 1 and comes here off a win, Rastnet has been knocking on the door, and Seagolazo is weighted to get involved if things fall right from wider out. It looks competitive rather than deep, and in a race where track craft will matter enormously, I’d much rather side with those drawn to travel handily than the flashier types marooned out wide.
Top Selections
1. Jupiter Ammon – 7/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 225-34 | Rating: 101 | Topspeed: 94
He makes plenty of appeal in a race where the basics matter, because stall 4 is a major asset and he’s nicely treated at the weights for one with this sort of profile. His form figures suggest a horse who keeps running his race in solid company, and that Topspeed mark of 94 stacks up well enough in this field. Balding’s 4yos often progress with racing, and Jupiter Ammon doesn’t look fully exposed at 1m2f yet. Oisin Murphy is exactly the rider you want around here: positive, sharp, and usually alive to the importance of early position. At 7/2 he isn’t a giveaway, but he’s the likeliest winner and very hard to oppose. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Londoner – 9/1 with Bet365
Jockey: David Egan | Trainer: Daniel & Claire Kubler | Form: -23031 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 81
At Chester, stall 1 is never something to ignore, and Londoner has the profile of one who could make that draw count. He arrives off the back of a win, his recent form is generally consistent, and this seasoned 6yo looks the type to hold his position and keep finding. He doesn’t have the raw upside of some of the younger runners, but handicaps like this are often won by battle-hardened types who get the run of the race. David Egan should have a very clear plan from the inside gate, and if Londoner gets into a smooth rhythm near the rail he can easily hit the frame. The 9/1 on offer looks fair for an each-way punt with four places. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Jupiter Ammon is the win play: solid form, a handy draw, and the right rider for this track. For an each-way angle, Londoner makes plenty of sense from stall 1 at 9/1, especially with four places on offer. Celeborn is respected despite a wider draw, while Rastnet and Seagolazo are the other two I’d keep onside in a very Chester-like puzzle.

16:45 – Chester Handicap (GBBPlus Race)
Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 3 | Going: 7.1) (watering) (rail movements (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a properly competitive three-year-old handicap rather than a penalty kick, with several unexposed middle-distance types arriving on the up. Mythical Bay heads the market after a tidy return win and is easy to like for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy, while Moment Of Light comes here seeking a hat-trick and has already attracted plenty of support from tipsters. High Storm brings the strongest Topspeed figure into the race, though stall 8 around Chester is no gift, and Parisian Scholar is interesting from the inside berth if he can make that draw count. In truth, this is the sort of race where tactical pace and track position will matter almost as much as raw ability, and that makes it a tricky but very watchable puzzle.
Top Selections
1. Mythical Bay – 11/4 with Bet365
Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 472-1 | Rating: 98 | Topspeed: 59
He makes plenty of appeal as a progressive sort now stepping further into the middle-distance bracket. That comeback win suggests he has trained on well from two to three, and Balding’s youngsters often improve sharply once they get a trip that allows them to settle and use their stride. Stall 6 is not ideal at Chester, but it is workable in a nine-runner race if Murphy can get him organised early. Off 98 he does not look thrown in, but he does look the horse with the most upside, and 11/4 is fair enough in a race where some of the others may be a bit more exposed to their marks. Bet type: win.
Bet: WIN
2. Parisian Scholar – 13/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 171-23 | Rating: 99 | Topspeed: 71
If you want one at a slightly bigger price, he is the each-way play. The Johnston camp is always worth respecting in races like this because they tend to be positive, and that matters around Chester from stall 1. He has already shown he can be competitive from this sort of mark, and his recent figures suggest he is holding his form well rather than tailing off. He is not obviously ahead of the assessor, but he is reliable, well berthed and likely to get the run of the race if breaking cleanly. At 13/2, that combination of draw, attitude and solid handicap form makes him a sensible each-way punt. Bet type: each-way.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Mythical Bay is the win play because he looks the likeliest improver and still has the scope to rate higher than this mark. Parisian Scholar is the each-way alternative, with stall 1 a major asset in a race where position will be crucial. The obvious dangers are Moment Of Light, who is thriving, and High Storm, who has the raw figures but a tougher draw to overcome.
