This may only be a six-runner contest, but it revolves around three fairly obvious players and that usually makes for an informative juvenile race rather than a messy betting heat. The Scallionator sets the standard on official figures after mixing it in better company, while Zoar arrives with the profile of a colt still going the right way after winning on his second start. Fighting Tears also commands plenty of respect after a winning debut and gets in here with just 125lb, which is no bad thing. The others need a sizeable leap on what they’ve shown so far, with Nation Blaze and Eyeconic looking up against it and Belle Parvenue asked to do plenty first time out. Strong little race, but not an impossible puzzle.

Revelator has at least shown a bit of ability and appeals as the obvious one to chase the favourite home, while Timucua Gold is another with scope to improve from a quiet enough debut under Colin Keane. The Joseph O’Brien trio have had their chances without really threatening so far, while Jungle Wise would need to be useful first time up to get seriously involved. On paper, this looks more straightforward than tricky.

The market is circling around solid recent handicap form, with Whatswrongnow, Sayonara and Liamo all arriving after creditable efforts, while Micasso and Cannonball Queen are interesting if building on their latest runs. There are plenty here with bits and pieces of form, but not many you could call bombproof, and that makes it a proper punting puzzle rather than a strong piece of handicap form. In a race like this, I want one with current momentum and one at a bigger price who is well treated enough to hit the frame.

Green Kite is the each-way angle at the prices. The latest run was poor enough, but I’m inclined to forgive one backward step in a race of this nature because the previous efforts, notably the placed runs, were good enough to make him very competitive off 63. Colin Keane taking over is an obvious positive in a big-field handicap where judgement and timing count for plenty, and his Topspeed figure of 59 stacks up perfectly well against most of these. From stall 19 he should have options, and 11/1 looks a fair bit more attractive than some of the shorter-priced rivals who have less room for error. He’s a sound each-way punt with six places on offer.
