3.00 Ayr – Mr Allan (1pt e/w 1,2,3,4 – 33/1 Bet365, 20/1 Generally)
I have gone back and forward in this race. Al Mubhir has not shown enough for me to think he warrants his price as favourite and powerful connections must have had an influence on his price. First Impression almost made the list after doing excellently well on the front end of the pace at York on return and won this race in 2020 and is four pounds lower but was flattered by his win there when well positioned in a slowly run affair. He should still be of interest but is limited. The trip has to be the concern for Revich backers but he is in calmer waters on the whole here while Chichester is a horse who bolted up in this last season, went off joint favourite for the Cambridgeshire and has fallen back in the handicap with more positive signs of late and the visor goes back on. He should be of interest as should Faylaq who finally finished out a race last time when unlucky not to finish closer. He remains well treated but I scrapped my shortlist given they all had some sort of claims and have opted to think outside the box and gone with MR ALLAN. It’s not often you see a George Boughey runner the outsider of the field and he has made the 360-mile journey for this his only runner. I think he has been running over the wrong trip. On the balance he was never going to stay the Melrose distance of 1m6f and it came on the back of a gelding operation (I usually like to back the second time). He was keen at Ascot in the King George when drawn wide in stall 20 at odds of 50/1 and he was posted wide for much of the race having to make his challenge furthest off the rail down the centre of the track. It was an excellent effort all considering but his prior runs in Listed company at Goodwood and to an extent in the Chester Handicap (when better than the bare result) he hasn’t been strong at the finish. Today he drops back in distance to 1m2f (a trip in which his sire excelled) which he is bred for and returns to the scene of his Maiden success in September 21′. He is ground versatile and he is unexposed at this trip. A good draw in stall five should see him gain a prominent position and he is unlikely to be falling short at this distance. Clifford Lee is an interesting booking – he rides this track well (24% strike rate this season) so he looks worth chancing at big odds.
3.27 Pontefract – Solar Joe (0.5pt e/w 12/1 Bet365, 9/1 Generally)
It would be folly to take SOLAR JOE’S performance in the Racing League at face value – that race turned into a sprint after a dawdal until the home straight and it simply didn’t suit him. He is well worth another chance switched back to turf at this trip afterall he has now dissapointed at Newcastle twice. He returns to the scene of his five length romp earlier in the season and there looks to be a good pace on in this contest. He was on the upgrade before his latest flop and a drop back into Class 4 company could do the trick.
