3.20 Yarmouth – Sound Angela (NAP) (1pt e/w – 5/1 Generally )
Roger Varian has a good record in this race, scoring in three of the last ten years and his runners priced shorter than 8/1 have form figures of 11215. SOUND ANGELA (also saddles Kind Gesture) looks like a three-year-old on the upgrade, and she caught the eye finishing her race off strongly despite a denied passage at Deauville last time when it paid to be on the pace. Nothing went right for her in that contest, but she left the impression there was a good deal more to come. The front three in that contest were all progressive three-year-olds, and it’s without hesitation that I say she would have come away with the prize granted with a clear run. She has a bit to find here with last year’s winner Ville De Grace for who it is hard to knock with Ryan Moore back on board off a short break, but she is well found in the market, and Roger Varian’s charge looks like a very fair each-way price from a good draw in stall 2 (you don’t want to have to come from too far behind at Yarmouth). She is worth chancing with an improved showing likely, and it must not be forgotten that she wiped the floor with the now 107-rated Al Qareem earlier in her career. She is progressive and could improve past last year’s winner.
3.35 Sandown – Magical Morning (1pt win – 6/1 Generally)
This race could turn tactical with the likes of Bayside Boy, Escobar, Sinjaari (second choice) and the free-going Sly Madam all likely to be held up. Auria looks the sole possible pace angle, while Sweet Believer, who holds a Group 1 entry, is interesting on return from a 341-day break, but jockey bookings suggest she could need this outing. MAGICAL MORNING could easily find himself well positioned from stall 7, and the presence of Frankie Dettori, who has been on board for the big days, could be a hint that connections are expecting a big run. The return to Sandown, where he scored cosily in the Coral Challenge, is a positive. Interestingly, he scored three times on his second start after a break. Still, he has run well outside of those, including an excellent third to Aldaary in the Balmoral Handicap. He should be well positioned to give his running, and that may be enough to score here, having already held Escobar at this venue (he is four pounds worse off today). Escobar – a good second in this race last year – doesn’t quite arrive in the same form, so Sinjaari, who was far better than the bare result at Salisbury, is favoured for the forecast. Tempus ran out the winner that day (subsequent winner, too), but Sinjaari was held up in a race slower than the proceeding Class 6 handicap and got no run continuously at Goodwood behind Orbaan from a wide draw. He relies on a strong pace, though, and is unlikely to get that today returned to the scene of his last win. Keep him on side after this should he fail to deliver.
5.37 Yarmouth – Time Step (2pt win – 11/4 generally)
This can go to TIME STEP, who makes his handicap debut for Sir Mark Todd and looks to have been let in lightly, inclusive of Harry Davies’ claim. He finished well clear of the remainder at Salisbury last time when bumping into a very useful type for Roger Varian, who is likely to rate in the mid-’90s, and the third and fourth have both won since. The drop back in trip is unlikely to inconvenience him, and while the slower ground is unknown, his speed figure and sectionals for his latest run see him well clear of his rivals today. He should take plenty of beating.
