3.30 Haydock – Cold Stare (1pt win – 6/1 Paddy, Will Hills, Betfair)

There’s a lot to like about COLD STARE, who sees the cheek-pieces re-introduced for the first time this season, and he is also encountering a softer surface for the first time since running well at Doncaster in a Class 2 event.

Today’s race is a drop into Class 4 company for the first time since October ’21 when scoring at Ayr over six furlongs. He was outpaced at Hamilton on his latest outing over six furlongs on good ground, and that’s easily forgiven, but he was an eye-catcher here in May on ground quicker than ideal.

Today’s conditions look spot-on, and he has scored here three times. Wobwobwob is on the radar for York, where his best performances have come, and he can be forgiven for his run at Beverley – he doesn’t like that track – but he caught the eye at York, looking in need of a stiffer test when racing on the wrong side of the track over six furlongs. He is seven pounds worse off with Cold Stare, who beat him by 2 3/4 lengths at Ayr last term, and that swings the vote.

5.20 Newbury – Secret Handsheikh (1pt win – 9/1 generally)

SECRET HANDSHEIKH was a big eye-catcher when finishing fast off the pace at Sandown three weeks ago, and there have been a handful of winners to come out of that contest. He was far better than the bare result suggested when beaten four lengths at Windsor on his start prior to having to come from stall 14 when attempting to make the running with the race developing down the stands rail.

That was his first two efforts over five furlongs since he was rated 79 at Windsor last July. He has scored twice over six furlongs in claiming contests, but he has been well held otherwise and down at this trip, he looks well handicapped on past exploits. He looks to be coming to the boil, and he races off an eight pounds lower turf mark after surprisingly being dropped two pounds for his latest run. George Bass is a useful apprentice.

7.11 Epsom – Pocket The Profit (2pts win – 11/4 bet365, 5/2 Will Hill, 9/4 Paddy, Betfair)

POCKET THE PROFIT ran a scorcher here earlier this month when behind Bowman from a wide draw in stall 14, and he didn’t have much go his way in a couple of starts prior when running without the hood, so it was even more of an encouraging effort with that headgear back on last time.

The hood remains on today, and he is taken to reverse that form in this smaller field event when likely to figure much closer to the pacesetter Bowman from the gates. On the balance of his form, he must go close. Confidence would grow significantly should Epsom receive rain overnight.

7.45 Epsom – Wodeton (2pts win – 5/1 bet365, 4/1 generally)

Larado was unlucky not to cling on to the lead at Salisbury last time, and the return to this venue is a positive for him, but the draw in stall eight and the presence of other front runners means he is taken on. WODETON broke slowly at Chester and was forced to sit and suffer at the rear of the field before making his challenge four-wide around the home turn.

He ran on strongly at the finish for a significant upgrade, and he signalled he was ready to strike. His recent form is hard to argue with, and this mark will be left behind sooner or later. This track should suit him, and he will get the strong pace he craves to aim at. Three-year-olds get nine pounds of weight for age allowance in this contest, and that could be enough to see him get a deserved victory.
