1.10 Haydock – HOT TEAM (1pt win 8/1 general)
Very few of these have even encountered soft ground, so the fact that HOT TEAM is at his best when the mud is flying could prove to be a huge advantage in this contest with rain due. He has left Richard Fahey and joined Patrick Morris, but he has rarely had conditions in his favour. When encountering good to soft or soft ground, his record reads 1310340132, and in the last two years, that record reads 1310, and he is running over his optimum trip of 1m2f. He went very well fresh in 2020 at this venue when rated 87 when fourth in a Class 3 event and since then has been on the go constantly until September last year (no break of fewer than 50 days). This break could have done him a world of good, and the only time he was disappointing after a break was in a Group 3 in Germany in 2019. He looks well worth chancing in this apprentice handicap under a good rider.

2.20 Ripon – TRUE COURAGE (3pt win 7/4 general)
This looks like a great opportunity for TRUE COURAGE to get back to winning ways after showing up well at Ascot in a highly competitive 0-95 Class 3 contest on seasonal return. He caught the eye, travelling strongly there before fading inside the final furlong. He is entitled to improve for that outing and today returns to the scene of his good success, which started his progression through the ranks last season. On the latest evidence, this mark is well within reach, and although he suffered three defeats last time, he had impossible tasks in the Melrose, Lavazza Stakes (where he ran an excellent third off 81 at 50/1) and the Old Rowley Cup. This is far calmer waters for him today, and the market should overestimate the performance of Shake A Leg, who dictated a very slowly run race at Doncaster and shouldn’t be allowed to do that today.

4.05 Yarmouth – KISS KISS (1pt win 8/1 Bet365, 5/1 general)
It’s worth taking a chance with KISS KISS, who makes her handicap debut and switches to turf for the first time. She has barely been asked for an effort in three runs at Wolverhampton, and the yard now goes to James Doyle to take the ride (2-7 29%). She has caught the eye in all three qualifying runs and has had to chase around some unexposed three-year-olds giving them lumps of weight, but the runs have not been devoid of promise. This is a weak enough field to start life out in handicaps, and it would be highly surprising should she not prove better than this opening handicap mark in time.

5.40 Sandown – THE WHIPMASTER (1pt win 9/2 Bet365, 4/1 general)
THE WHIPMASTER‘s win at Lingfield was long overdue, and he has returned this season with two career-best performances up to this distance – the other an eye-catching effort at Windsor on return which was six lengths quicker than the useful Maiden on the card. He ran this track well when outpaced and denied a clear run over 7f here last year and has always given the impression he is better than this grade and finally looks ready to show it. He is a horse to catch early in the season, and the booking of Ryan Moore is eye-catching at this venue. Glen Esk and Wonder Starelzaam are both likely dangers.

8.35 Sandown – SIP AND SMILE (1pt win 4/1 Bet365 BUT take no less than 4/1)
SIP AND SMILE did well to battle back at Doncaster to take care of an upwardly mobile rival who has some strong form lines of her own. It doesn’t matter where you look; Sip And Smile’s form works out at every turn, and whatever he has achieved over 6f/7f will likely turn out to be a bonus. He is a dour stayer in the making, and the step up to 1m will only offer another avenue of improvement. He is drawn well in stall four to gain a prominent position in the race, and his attitude will be well suited to Sandown’s stiff finish.
