1.35 Exeter – ANGLERS CRAG (1.5pt win – 10/3 Sky Bet/Livescore, 3/1 generally)

ANGLERS CRAG looked a good way ahead of the handicapper if you were to stop his seasonal return run momentarily before his fall over course and distance nine days ago. He looks worth siding with to gain compensation. David Pipe’s runner shaped in need of the run at Ffos Las on return before travelling smoothly on his first chase start before coming down at Exeter, and it’s wise to think that this winning pointer would have played a strong hand in the finish. His point-to-point form looks useful and makes him look very well-handicapped. The runner-up, Mongol Emperor, is rated 124 over hurdles (118) over fences, and in fourth was the 117-rated Pasvolsky. He is not going to be a world-beater, but he is certainly ahead of his rating of 115, and he has optimum conditions. His bumper form from Ireland doesn’t read half bad, either. Still, Blackjack Magic has a good record fresh and is feared, with his trainer having a 20% strike rate with the fitting of the tongue-tie, but he is not thrown in off 125. The favourite Rose Of Arcadia steps out of Mares only company for the first time under rules and will surely drift. Eminent Poet is switched back to fences, but whether the 12-year-old wants a 3m slog in the mud is up for debate, and he was poor at Wincanton, although is respected on back-class.

3.45 Exeter – MACK THE MAN (1pt win – 11/2 Betfair, 5/1 generally)

If Evan Williams and Adam Wedge can’t get a victory out of MACK THE MAN here, then his future looks bleak. This is a poor race on the whole, and favourite Fanfaron Dino is not to be fully trusted. None of these looks progressive, and although the selection is slightly on the decline, this is a drop in grade and a return to the scene of his last victory. For some strange reason, Adam Wedge trod the worst of the ground on the inside route at Fontwell, and it’s imperative if someone sneezes on that track to go wide. Regardless he wouldn’t have beaten the wide-travelling and well-handicapped Yorksea, but he was better than the bare result there. He is worth chancing down into a Class 4 for the first time.

7.00 Southwell – SPIRIT OF NGURU (1.5pt win – 11/4 generally)

If there is a winner in waiting, then SPIRIT OF NGURU is that horse, and he is turned out 15 days after shaping well from off a break in first-time cheek-pieces at Wolverhampton. That run was evident as to why they fitted the headgear, and today represents slightly calmer waters. He finished strongly at Wolverhampton once gathered up, and this stiffer test should prove right up his street. He is drawn widest in stall nine, but there is no draw bias at this venue and coming down the outside of the field is preferable. William Haggas enters one horse today (this lad), and he has an excellent 32% strike rate here in the last five years, and this is an improving four-year-old we are yet to see the best of. The market has underestimated him on account of the draw.
