3.40 Leicester – Union Court (1pt win – 7/1 Will Hill, 6/1 Bet365, 9/2 generally)
UNION COURT offers a little value in this contest after doing well at Newmarket on her latest start when drawn on the wrong side of the track. That form ties in closely with Magical Sunset’s run at the Curragh over seven furlongs last time, and I rate her the biggest danger in this contest. The return to a sounder surface looks positive to her chances, and this six-furlong trip is also right up her street. She gets the services of Tom Marquand, and the return to a more conventional track should suit her.
3.55 Hereford – Cotton End (1pt win – advised @SP)
COTTON END has been off the track for 309 days, but she returns with plenty in her favour, dropped into a class 4 off of a reduced rating. Harry Kimber has finished first and third on his two rides for this yard and is excellent value for his five pounds claim, and his mare is 16lbs lower than when I fancied her strongly to score here last November when she unseated early. Her record at this Hereford venue reads UF17, but she would likely have given the useful 133-rated Maskada something to think about when coming down upsides on her previous visit. Her fitness will need to be taken on trust, but this is not a strong contest, and she has won fresh previously (Beat Glory And Fortune at Ludlow last May). She looks worth chancing. Say Nothing is entitled to improve for her latest run, which came after a wind operation, and she was in the process of recording a good time figure before falling here last October. Molliana finished well ahead of the selection at Taunton the last term but is a 14lbs worse off with Cotton End today.
4.50 Leicester – Romantic Time (0.5pt e/w -22/1 Will Hill, 20/1 Paddy Power/Betfair)
Ribhi (0.5pt e/w – 14/1 Bet365, 12/1 Will Hill, 11/1 Generally)
ROMANTIC TIME has been frustrating, to say the least, and it probably won’t be long before we see some headgear go on. Still, it’s hard to argue that she is not well-handicapped, and this step up in trip could see her to good effect after being comprehensively outpaced on the last two occasions we backed her over six. Her Yarmouth run has worked out well, with the two horses finishing ahead of her going on to finish close up to the improving Azure Blue on separate occasions, and the fourth was a winner next time out. There’s little pace on offer in this contest, so it won’t take a stout-staying performance from her at the trip, and she could have the sharper turn of foot if it turns tactical. Excuses are wearing thin, but she is worth keeping the faith in.
It’s worth chancing RIBHI also, who has been off for 117 days and has just his second start in a handicap against more exposed rivals. He caught the eye in the Britannia Handicap when last seen when touched off by four lengths. He did plenty that day from the rear of the field and was one of just a few who got into it, and it’s hard to get his excellent close-up fifth in the Flying Scotsman Stakes out of mind. It’s positive to see Jim Crowley up top, and he is entitled to improve for a second run after a gelding operation.
6.35 Newcastle – Enigmatic (1pt win – 16/1 Paddy Power, 14/1 Generally)
ENIGMATIC was a big eye-catcher at Yarmouth on his penultimate start before running no sort of race at Goodwood, but the return to the AW looks a positive given he has finished in the frame on six of his 12 starts. He returns to Newcastle, where he was narrowly touched off last November, and this is a horse that could get 1m2f, but his optimum conditions are a stiff 1m. He reunites with Kevin Stott, who rode him on his last run on the AW here at Newcastle when rated 87, and he now drops slightly in grade into a 0-80, now seven pounds lower. His form ties in with the improving favorite, and he has clocked a quicker time over this 1m straight at Newcastle than anything in the field. Kevin Stott rides this track well, and there don’t seem to be stacks of pace on in the race, so his likely prominent position could give him an edge.
