3.45 Exeter – Gaelic Thunder (0.5pt win – 33/1 generally)
I am working at Exeter tomorrow, and there is little in the way of potential punts on the card, but the 15:45 looks particularly weak, and I am somewhat surprised that GAELIC THUNDER has been stuck in as the rank outsider at big odds.
No horse in this field at this level should really be given little chance, especially one that recorded a career-best in a newly fitted cheek-piece and tongue-tie combination when last seen. He stayed on well at Wincanton in April, and he didn’t run too badly in a good Novice Hurdle on his last start here, which would have seen him finish seventh but for the interference of a loose horse. He was never going to win that contest, but he was too free early, and that seventh would be the best form in this race.
His trainer has had two winners from seven runners over fences at Exeter, and this is jockey David Noonan’s sole ride of the day. He might just be worth throwing a small dart at.
3.55 Yarmouth – Profitable Dawn (1pt win – 8/1 Bet365, 6/1 William Hill, 11/2 BetUK)
PROFITABLE DAWN looks interesting on this second start in a handicap after being dropped a couple of pounds for her eye-catching run here over five furlongs last time. She has given the impression that a step up in distance would suit each of her two runs at this venue. She improved for the fitting of the tongue tie last time, and slow ground could easily turn this into a test of stamina for which her pedigree has a good blend along with speed.
As I write this, she is backed from 14/1 into 7/1, frustratingly, but she still looks like one of the most likely improvers in this field. Back her at no shorter than 5/1.
4.30 Yarmouth – Camachess (NAP) (1pt win – 14/1 generally)
It may pay to take a chance on the very well-handicapped CAMACHESS who returns to her favoured Yarmouth for the first time since September 2021 and drops into a Class 6. She has a record here of three wins from eight starts (38%) and is a heavy ground winner at this venue.
Adam Farragher claims a further five pounds off her back, putting her down to a basement mark of 51 – 16 pounds lower than her last visit. She is pretty consistent for this level, and all nine of her wins have come at six furlongs for which she hasn’t raced since July (two starts ago), but the handicapper has dropped her in the weights effectively (including the claim) ten pounds and the blinkers could spark her back to life.
5.05 Yarmouth – Island Of Sky (NAP) (0.5pt E/W – 20/1 generally)
ISLAND OF SKY was well-backed when put up for a bet at Kempton under William Buick, but she was slowly away again and had no chance of getting in contention in a race that was run at a crawl. Prominent racers were winning all night, so it might be best to forgive that run now back on turf and drop into a Class 6 for the first time.
This is far easier on paper against some exposed types, and in the hope that her new yard opts to give instructions to ride more prominently, the drop back in trip should see her outrun her odds. She was tenderly handled in her three Novice runs, so better is expected in handicaps at some point, and the switch to soft ground should be no bother being by Ribchester.
