7.00 Ayr – Soldiers Minute (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
Woven is a force at this Class 3 level, but soft ground allows his strong finishing effort to be seen to best effect, so with a quicker surface here, he might be worth taking on. Abduction has more to offer, finding five furlongs on the sharp side last time and likes it here but is vulnerable to propper sprinters. Fast And Loose should be of interest with the cheek-pieces switched out for the blinkers, but the two class droppers Venturous and SOLIDIER’S MINUTE make the most appeal. Both of these runners are rated higher on the AW, but it makes little sense as to why. The selection is 12 lbs higher on the AW but caught the eye at York last week when he was continuously denied a clear run behind Bielsa, and that form is the strongest on offer. One can only assume that the handicapper has dropped him seven pounds for his winter in Bahrain, having left on 106 (on the AW). He hasn’t raced on turf before last week since head second in the Ayr Silver Cup in September 2021 when running off 92 and now returns to this venue which has seen him run creditably in big handicaps on every attempt on good or better ground off 87. He is down into a Class 3 contest for the first time since scoring at Kempton in 2019, and given he clearly arrives in good heart, he is the one to side with turned out quickly. Venturous isn’t taken at all lightly but showed little spark at Newcastle last time.
8.00 Ayr – Espressoo (1pt win – 17/2 generally)
It might be worth giving a chance to ESPRESSOO, who saw her form tail off at the back end of last season, but her spring antics make for good reading in the context of this race, and the drop in class and the recent break are reasons to be positive. She won in excellent style on seasonal return last year at this venue, scoring eased down and backed it up next time before being narrowly denied at York by the useful Heredia. She caught the eye at Epsom and Pontefract last year, suggesting she could have a bit in hand of the handicapper, and things look right for a big run today down in calmer waters.
