3.30 Bangor – Prince Des Fichaux (1pt win – 10/3 BetVictor/William Hill, 3/1 generally)
It’s worth siding with PRINCE DES FICHAUX, who returns to action for Sam Thomas on a very workable handicap rating of 107 on the balance of his form. It was an excellent debut at Hereford when chasing home the 137-rated City Chief, who had the run of the race on the front end and subsequently scored before finishing a very good fifth at Punchestown in a hot handicap. The selection had little chance to get into the race at the rear of the small field but ran on strongly. Two quick runs in just under four weeks followed where the hood worn on debut was removed, which saw him keen. He has had wind surgery and sees the hood return along with the tongue tie, and he drops into a 0-110 for this return run. This is a poor race on paper, and nothing really looks open to further improvement other than the Alan King favourite, who steps up considerably in distance today and has to prove his stamina and was keen enough at Wincanton and Warick in very slowly run races. There should be a fair pace to aim at, and he looks a fair price at 5/2 or bigger.
7.30 Newcastle – Vindobala (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill, 7/2 generally)
VINDOBALA was a huge eye-catcher from well off an ordinary gallop seven days ago, and while she is not the most reliable horse, she is at least in the right grade. She has an excellent track record when running in Class 5 or lower races, with form figures of 21221354. Her penultimate run at this venue can easily be forgiven, having strangely led the field when she usually comes with a fast late rattle. She is clearly a better performer on the AW, having finished in the first three 9 of her 12 starts with her penultimate start, and two of her runs back at the start of her career, the only three outside the frame. She certainly has the ability to win this on paper, and there is a good bit of pace for her to aim at, with four of these having made the running on their latest start.
