5.00 Wolverhampton – Star Sight (1pt win – 4/1 generally)
I made a mistake yesterday by getting involved in some low-graded hurdle racing – something our 2022 P/L report suggested we avoid – so I apologize for that. We switch to the AW today, and STAR SIGHT finished with a flurry at Chelmsford when last seen 138 days ago, and while the absence is a slight concern, she is completely unexposed and takes a slight ease in grade. The hood worn for her two previous qualifying runs and her narrow handicap debut defeat is now removed, and her shorthead conquerer is now rated 16 lbs higher in the handicap, having since won twice. She was no match for the winner, who scored having defied trouble in the running, but it was such a big step forward from the selection – she is hard to ignore in this company off the same mark and is bred to be far better than this grade while a stronger pace today will certainly suit.
7.00 Wolverhampton – Secret Handsheikh (0.5pt e/w – 66/1 generally)
SECRET HANDSHEIKH may be worth a small play returning from a break, having spent all bar one of his starts last season on turf. His sole attempt on the AW came on return in a Class 3 at Kempton when given an impossible task at SP odds of 100/1. Despite running with credit on the turf last term and scoring at Chepstow, he is a better horse on the AW as his eight pounds higher rating suggests, and his Chepstow victory came in the first-time visor that is retained today. In the hope that the break and the reapplication of this headgear have the same effect, he has a far more manageable task on his hands today than his Kempton effort now down into a Class 5 contest. His previous start in this sphere saw him SP at odds of just 6/1 when beaten nine lengths by Group 1 winner Rohaan at this time of the year in 2021, and before that had scored off marks of 71 and 80 in Class 4 and 3 company to take his AW form figures to 0181126 – three wins from seven starts. The return to six furlongs will suit, and his low mileage in this sphere makes him of interest in an open event having been dropped seven pounds for his Kempton defeat.
