6.00 Southwell – Themainprotagonist (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 generally)
I am quite happy to take on odds-on favourite Zoology, who was impressive in a slow time at Yarmouth on debut before bombing out in the Middle Park Stakes. The seasonal return for one so promising here at Southwell is surely a red flag, and he is not guaranteed to repeat the feat on this surface (Sire Zoustar just 9% on the AW) or on his first attempt around a bend. He saddles a seven pounds penalty, so take him on with Charles Hills’ THEMAINPROTAGONIST. Hills is 18% here with three-year-olds and has a 42% strike rate with Kieran Shoemark at this venue, and the trainer is 1-1 with first-time-out three-year-olds at this venue and is profitable to back £48 to a £1 level stake on the AW with three-year-olds making their debut. The selection is a full brother to the smart pair Khaadem and Log Out Island, and given this is the trainer’s only runner on the card, it may pay to take a small chance at a wild price. Take no less than 16/1.
8.30 Southwell – Perfect Swiss (0.5pt e/w – 7/1 888 Sport, 13/2 Will Hill, 6/1 generally)
This could be a good bit of placing by connections with PERFECT SWISS, given there was an ample opportunity to run against some of the same horses he met at Newcastle yesterday at the same venue, but they have decided to drop in grade into a Class 5 0-70 rather than take that Class 4 0-80 option. This is far weaker, and he has scored here twice from five starts, and although having been frustrating to back, he hasn’t had a good pace to aim at racing Newcastle (rare anyways) on his last three starts and when he did last time he reared at the off and lost plenty of ground. Still, he caught the eye when better than the bare result. Interestingly enough, away from that Newcastle venue, when dropped into a Class 5 or lower, his record reads 142472121520 (3 wins and 4 seconds from 12 starts). However, looking at those away from Newcastle on the AW in Class 5 or lower, they read 112 – both wins at this venue. The market leader Ebury has been contesting Class 6 company on his last 11 starts and has failed to get the job done, so it will surely drift. One More Dream turns out quickly six days on from his Lingfield tired-looking fourth over six furlongs, but he has won twice from three starts when turned out within seven days (all in class 6 company when in the groove last October after wind surgery), so can’t be completely dismissed but this doesn’t look his optimum distance. Northbound makes his return to the track after 189 days off and is feared, particularly if the market speaks in his favour having run well on return last year, but it’s hard to know what to expect. Rumnotred is the least exposed of these and had shaped well until his effort here 42 days ago. If he can put that behind him, he can have a say, but now needs to step forward. Eaton College is not one to write off fresh, but he is 0-8 on the AW. At an each-way price, the selection makes the most appeal. Take no less than 6/1.
