This is a competitive race for the grade, but MAXI BOY could potentially blow this race open on return from 630 days off the track, so it’s worth chancing he retains his old ability. Given his absence, it’s tempting to put a line straight through him, but he has gone very well off long breaks previously, including when an excellent fast finishing third at Lingfield in a Class 2 0-105 off 96 back in 2020 having been off the track for 455 days. He has recently been gelded, and Michael Bell has a 20% strike rate with runners the first time of asking. The booking of Oisin Murphy is surely no accident with their 24% strike rate (five from their last 12), and today represents a drop into Class 4 company for the first time. Makeen rates the obvious danger, having looked like a winner in waiting when denied a clear run at Newmarket last time, but it’s not the first time he has shaped like that in his career and failed to back it up and is well-found in the market. Ernie’s Valentine has been frustrating to back, but perhaps a return to Leicester could see him go well while Thapa VC was second in this race last year. Above has run well below what he is capable of the last twice, and one would need to see more of a spark before considering him. Royal Musketeer has won the second time out in 2022, 2021 and 2020, so he must be taken seriously, but he needs a step forward in today’s company. Golden Spice, Amber Island and Touchwood are all in win their chances in a competitive heat, so tread lightly.
