3.41 Ripon – Oso Rapido (1pt each way – 16/1 bet365, 14/1 general)

Mark’s Choice is the obvious candidate for this race as he looks to go one better than last year (we backed him heavily then), but it might be worth taking a chance on OSO RAPIDO, who comfortably beat Bossipop and Cottam Lane last September at Pontefract despite being unfavoured by his racing position. He returns to the scene of his eye-catching debut run when chasing home the useful Misty Grey, so we know he handles this track well. He ran flat at Doncaster last time but probably in line with his odds of 50/1 in that competitive Racing League class 3 over seven furlongs, and he was no match for the progressive Pure Dreamer, subsequent York winner Bergerac and subsequent winner Alligator Alley. This is far easier than that contest on the whole, and he won well at Catterick, recording his second-best joint RPR (best was beating Fortamour at Newcastle, a horse that ties in with many of these. The return to six furlongs and the drop back into a class 4 for which his record with this combination reads 193118 since switching to Roger Fell is a positive, and he is partnered again by Ben Curtis (1-1 6f). He looks a fair each-way price at double figures odds.

5.15 Carlisle

Glorious Rio (1pt win – 9/1 bet 365, 8/1 generally)

Motashaweq (0.5pt each way – 14/1 888, 12/1 generally)

GLORIOUS RIO was a big eye-catcher at Haydock when doing best of those from the rear of the field in a strong class 4 event and did the best of those racing stand side. Of the other horses to come down the unfavored stand side, Show Me Show me won next time and The Thin Blue Line, when close at Sandown, upped in grade (4th, beaten 1 1/4 lengths). He was better than the bare result there, finishing with a fast flurry, and he bolted up here on his penultimate start (6f). He has a liking for this course, and dropped back into a class 5 could be the ticket to see him score again. His slow starts have cost him some races in the past, but Joanna Mason gets on well with him, so she should be ready for it. This is his time of year with AUG for figures of 41113100, and a likely strong pace here will suit his strong finishing effort.

It takes a leap of faith to back MOTASHAWEQ, but if his last two runs can be forgiven due to needing a wind operation, then he would have solid claims down into a Class 5. He is completely unexposed and was a good winner of a Hamilton Novice earlier this season before chasing home the useful Silky Wilkie at the same venue. He led for a long way at York before folding tamely (wind perhaps) and then had no chance at Chester from stall ten but ran with credit.
