1.45 Hamilton – Timbukone (1pt win, 9/2 bet365, 4/1 generally)
This can go to TIMBUKONE, who was behind Head Chef and May Punch at Ripon but failed to handle the undulations there and was undone by his racing position, giving first run to his rivals. The return to a more conventional track that emphasises stamina will suit, and he is less exposed than his rivals with the promise of more to come. He has had few opportunities to show what he can do, having run over six furlongs and a sharp seven twice at two, and with stamina, in the pedigree, it’s highly likely this 1m will probably prove the minimum going forward. He can fight out the finish and get the better of the quirky Shaladar, who is a rightful favourite but a handful.
2.45 Hamilton – Hortzadar (1pt each-way, 22/1 Sky Bet & Betvictor, 20/1 888sport)
I am surprised that HORTZADAR is the outsider of the field here, given his form ties in very closely with Fame And Acclaim, and he is a course winner here (albeit DSQ for weighing in light). He needs to be forgiven for his latest two runs. He got no run in the Royal Hunt Cup last time, but that’s not his bag anyway – a stiff straight mile taking on unexposed horses – and his price tag of 80/1 should have reflected his chances. In his run prior at Epsom, he was drawn out of things in stall 12 and forced five wide the entire journey, so I am happy to forgive that also.
He offers value here, given he is drawn well in stall three and likely to gain a prominent position with plenty of cover. He likes to be delivered late, and he could easily get the ideal scenario with the front-running Australian Theory going to have to work hard early from stall 10 to get the lead. His trainer has form figures of 112 in this contest, but all three runners ran in the Britannia before this race, and this one didn’t, although there is little doubt it has been the target, and he could be worth a cover bet. Ghaly may be the key to this race on the back of a mammoth absence of 662 days, but he is well found in the market and can only be watched.
