Not for the first time, ERNIE’S VALENTINE shaped like he wanted a step up in distance at Newmarket recently when chasing home the well-handicapped Harry Three doing best of those from off the pace. He has a progressive profile and is now fitted with the first time cheek-pieces, and with this talented seven pounds claimer retained, he could easily take a step forward over this new trip. He is a half brother to Montatham and has listed winners up to 1m2f in the family, but his racing style should be well suited to this straight seven at Newbury. It’s only a matter of time before he gets his head in front again on turf and today’s scenario looks spot on.

4.30 Leicester – NIGHT OF LUXURY (1pt win – 15/2 general)
A chance is taken with NIGHT OF LUXURY for a trainer that has a 42% strike rate here with three-year-olds in the last five years. He returns from a disappointing spell on the dirt in Meydan but has always shaped as though he would be seen to better effect when stepped up in distance. Today marks his handicap debut, and first start on turf, and that could be enough along with the step up in trip to see an improved effort. The visor worn in Meydan is quickly discarded, and his earlier AW form suggests this mark should be well within reach. Wootoon’Sun is feared most, but he hasn’t been the strongest stayer at this distance in two starts.

8.34 Yarmouth – FORWARD FLIGHT (1pt win – 10/3 Hills, 3/1 general)
FORWARD FLIGHT offered plenty to work on in three starts last term, and he might be worth chancing on seasonal return off what looks like a workable handicap mark on handicap debut. The booking of Hollie Doyle (21%) suggests he will be fit and ready to go. He was too immature last term and failed to settle on multiple occasions, so all three of his efforts can be upgraded. The worry today is that he may prove too keen on return, but he looks worth chancing at the prices. Fourshadesofsilver is one to keep on side when tackling middle distances.
