2.30 Goodwood – Edge Of Darkness (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
Plenty of respect is given to High Honour, who looked like a potential improver at Sandown when given a schooling run and Band Of Steel, who has recorded an RPR ten pounds higher than his closest rival in this feild, is the one to beat. Still, a chance is taken on EDGE OF DARKNESS, who shaped with considerable promise at Ripon despite running very green. He has a good stride on him and made considerable progress from the rear of the field. He was all at sea on the undulations there, but his trainer has an excellent record at this track, and he will improve considerably for that run. He has stacks of scope, and in the hope that he breaks better this time and Richard Kingscote makes more use of him, he could be hard to catch.
3.05 Goodwood – Expeditious (1.5pt win – 11/2 Coral, 5/1 generally)
This is an interesting race, The Big Board, heads the market and is quick out of the gates, but this opening handicap rating of 82 looks on the high side on the balance, and she is not certain to handle this softer surface over this trip. Her form has not worked out, and the stand-out piece (her Doncaster third) saw her flattered by her finishing position. Beautiful Aisling is on a stiff rating here of 90. She did well to score at Beverley, but a six pounds rise looks harsh, especially as the short-head defeated runner-up was left on the same rating. She is another that is not guaranteed to stay this six furlongs on a softer surface. Corinthian Kid won in good style at Windsor. Still, in comparison to the Class 2 race next on the card, she would have finished stone cold last, so despite the boost from the runner-up (who was unfavourably positioned), she has a bit to do in this company, and this is a big step up in grade, but she is the second preference. Love Affairs has shown little to think she is capable of scoring off of 79, and this is a step up in class. Her form ties in with the favourite The Big Board but to a lesser extent. It might pay to give a chance to EXPEDITIOUS, who makes her handicap debut (trainer 23%) and looks like a race-by-race improver. She is drawn well here today in stall six, which could see the rail help her significantly should this become a test, and she finished in good style on the AW last time. It looked like an impossible position to come from to win the race at Chelmsford. The third has since won, and the runner-up sets a useful standard with form figures of 212222 on the AW, so it looks like a reliable piece of form. She will get further than this and looks a solid option.
Today’s Racing
3.40 Goodwood – Morando (1pt win – 10/3 generally)
MORANDO was undoubtedly disappointing on seasonal return at this venue, but the cheek-pieces were missing, and it might be worth forgiving that performance and judging him on his latest soft ground run in a stronger race at Haydock. He was denied a clear run and was just building up esteem as the race developed ahead of him. He stuck to the task strongly in the closing stages, and the form of that race looks good in the context of this one. He has been waiting since July for soft ground, and it’s highly likely connections will get their wish today. He should remain of interest at this level, and his useful claimer taking off five pounds means he is running off his lowest career rating since his handicap debut at Chester and is in a handicap for just the second time since 2016. He has conditions to suit today, and he may be able to capitalise.
4.45 Goodwood – Seeola (NAP) (2pt win – 3/1 BetVictor/Unibet, 5/2 general)
SEEOLA’S Goodwood experience here last month should hold her in good stead in this contest, and she looks just the type that a strong test of stamina will suit well. Her breeding suggests she wants fast ground, but her action says otherwise. She had little chance from her racing position when she bumped into a smart one last month. She was slowly away and keen at the rear of the field, but she finished off her race well, and she looked a sure-fire improver. I am keen to take on the market leader Maghlaak who is not sure to stay this far and was well positioned to score at Kempton. He switches to turf for the first time and must give the selection 12lbs under this penalty, so it will take a decent performance from him to score here. Later Darling won’t stay, and the two newcomers will need a market check but don’t jump off the page. Seeola is a value bet at her current odds.
