2.13 Southwell – Jilly Cooper (1pt win – 9/2 888, 4/1 generally)
JILLY COOPER is one of two three-year-olds in this field and is open to further improvement now, finally stepping up to 1m. The trip move has been a long time coming after staying on strongly at Chelmsford when caught out of her ground on two occasions recently. She did the same thing at Wolverhampton last time when bumping into a very useful filly in Manaafith, and the third Farhh To Shy is also a very promising horse. This is far easier on paper, and the trip will bring about further improvement, so she has to be considered.
2.40 Newcastle – Billy Bathgate (1pt win – 7/1 Bet365, 9/2 generally)
BILLY BATHGATE will have Victory March to deal with today, but he has only had five starts on the flat, and although looking for his first victory, he was a big eye-catcher at Wolverhampton when doing the best of those from off a very slow pace. The winner was well positioned, and the selection came from a mile back and circled the field on the wide outside but hit the line hard, suggesting he was undone by his position. He might be worth chancing up grade at a track that should see him to better effect with emphasis on stamina, and a more prominent ride would prove beneficial.
3.13 Newcastle – Cloch Nua (1.5pt win – 11/4 bet365, 5/2 generally)
CLOCH NUA was given a stiff task from off a slow pace at Wolverhampton 17 days ago, and this three-year-old is firmly on the upgrade on that evidence. The return to Newcastle, where he recently overcame another pace bias earlier this year, is a positive move and today represents a drop back into Class 6 company. The slight step up in distance should also be viewed as a positive to his chances, and there is a lot to like about this unexposed three-year-old who has recorded three career-best performances this winter.
4.45 Newcastle – Straights Of Moyle (1pt win – 7/2 generally)
STRAIGHTS OF MOYLE gave the firm impression that a return to form was imminent when catching the eye from the rear of the field and the wrong side of the track here over course and distance 18 days ago. Today he drops back into a Class 4 event – which produced his last victory over today’s rivals Tothenines at Haydock. This track has also seen him a close fourth behind one now rated seven pounds higher. He is an unexposed three-year-old who looks to have found a smashing opportunity to get back to winning ways. Today’s favourite had to drop back to 5f and into a Maiden to get off the mark at the eighth attempt, while has already scalped Tothenines and would have finished much closer to Bellagio Man granted a clear run. He gets the vote.
5.00 Southwell – Tathmeen (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
TATHMEEN won very easily at Wolverhampton on his penultimate start under a very inexperienced rider which masked his superiority, and his latest run here emphasized the lack of experience of his rider. He finished with plenty of running left, and a more vigorous ride would have seen him finish much closer to the winner than his three-length deficit. James Sullivan jumps back on board now, and he is worth keeping on side while in this sort of heart. He is well-handicapped on the best of his efforts, and he will get a strong pace to aim at today.
