1.20 Wetherby – Fransham (2pt win – 5/1 Bet365, 3/1 generally)
FRANSHAM makes plenty of appeal on this return to action. He would have won when last seen at Huntingdon, but for a mistake at the last, and that race clocked a good time figure. He returns to Wetherby, for which his record over hurdles read 115112, and he won fresh here in 2019. He is fairly handicapped on the balance of his form, and this is his optimum trip with form figures of 11112 at Wetherby over 2m. Today he has optimum conditions and has recorded the strongest time figures in the race.

3.30 Nottingham – Mr Alan (1pt win – 4/1 generally)

Lunar Jet (0.5pt e/w – 20/1 generally)
This is a good race, but I want to stick with MR ALAN, who ran a good time figure at Ayr when he was narrowly touched off for us at huge odds. He now drops in grade into a Class 3 contest for the first time since being narrowly touched off at Chester when far better than the bare result over a trip slightly too far of 1m4f. He has had just two attempts at this distance, with the other at Newmarket. I am always happy to forgive a run at that venue, and that did come off the back of a 174 days break. He was a clear non-stayer in the Melrose, but he was a big eye-catcher at Ascot when fitted with these cheek-pieces for the first time in the King George. His latest run recorded a career-best RPR, and he should have no trouble with soft ground with this combination of 1m2f and a softer surface perhaps his optimum. Marhaba The Champ has an excellent pedigree, but he was well positioned to clock good closing sectionals at Hamilton after a slow early pace, while Cumulonibus, who could prove ahead of the handicapper yet, may prove best over further in time.

LUNAR JET is the outsider of the field at the time of writing but will no doubt have his supporters come off time now handicapped to have a say, and he did win this in 2020. Still, age may be catching up with him, but he has ideal conditions for those looking for one at a bigger price. The last time he raced on genuinely soft ground, like today’s, saw him finish an excellent 5th in the November Handicap off 11lbs higher, and today he is back on soft ground and returned to Nottingham, where he has placed 50% of the time. His best form has come in the year’s later months, with four of his seven wins in September/October and November. He may not be up to the level one or two of these can potentially reach, but the return to Nottingham – particularly the race he won in 2020 – should ensure he outruns his odds. 20/1 is too big but don’t take less than 10/1.
