2.20 Yarmouth – FANTASY BELIEVER (2pt win – 7/2 generally)
It was an excellent return to form for FANTASY BELIEVER at Newmarket, having run adequately at Ascot over the straight mile previously behind a couple of improvers. This looks like a good spot for him to build on his narrow second to Repertoire last time, and he came good at this time of year last season in June when racking up a couple of victories in Class 3 and 4 company and thanks to Billy Loughnane’s claim he is weighted to have a big say. Small fields outside of Class 2 company have seen him to good effect over the years, and with nine or fewer runners, his record reads 2117272 in the past two years, and this contest is less demanding than many of those, and this Class 4 company is his level. A step forward for Lion’s Dream after wind surgery in first-time cheek-pieces would see him involved, while Goddess Of Fire has excuses for her run here on return and may get a soft lead. Either way, both need to improve to match the selection’s latest performance.
7.40 Kempton – BILLY MILL (2pt win – 17/2 SkyBet, 8/1 generally)
BILLY MILL has been edging his way back to form, and the return to a 1m here last time saw him to good effect despite being denied a clear run at a crucial stage, so he is fancied to back that up at the chief expense of the returning Whispering Song. The latter left a good impression at Chelmsford when last seen, but the handicapper has left nothing to chance with this opening rating of 82, and Sir Mark Prescott hasn’t had a handicap winner at Kempton since 2020, so she may need this. In turn, the selection loves this venue with form figures reading 32536021942, but breaking those down over today’s distance of 1m, see them read 330212 and those in Class 4/5 company like today read 33212. His RPRs have steadily risen this season, and the handicapper has given him a chance. At the same time, jockey Saffie Osborne gets on well with him with a narrow third latest, a third to a progressive rival in January and a victory at Newcastle at 28/1 in class 3 company off 1lb lower than today’s rating of 81. A good draw in stall one is another positive, and a prominent ride looks likely.
