7.00 Kempton – DARK TROOPER (3pt win – 15/8 Bet365, 7/4 generally)

DARK TROOPER looked a handful on return for Ross Coakley, having made his AW debut after a break and a gelding operation. He hung to the left and then right under pressure, but there was far more in the tank than the winning margin suggested.

He was a big eye-catcher at Newbury last term in a hot Maiden that has produced plenty of winners (hung left there), and he took a step forward with his Southwell win with the step back up to seven furlongs looking like a positive move. The same can’t be said about his main market rival Dyed In The Wool, who won a very slowly run race at Newcastle earlier this month and arrives with a bit to prove. To put it into context, he would have finished stone cold last in the following 0-55 Class 6 handicap. He showed a bright turn of foot, but his stamina for this trip should is not a given.

In the hope that Tom Marquand gets a good prominent position (many of these like to or have been held up in recent starts) from a good draw in stall two and uses the rail to help his mount (Marquand is excellent with the stick in the left hand) – he will take some pegging here.
