2.20 Leopardstown – Fury Road (0.5pt e/w – 16/1 generally)
Franco De Port (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally)
A Plus tard needs to bounce back from a poor effort at Haydock, and a lot seemingly depends on a good performance here. Conflated was good in this contest last year but had the run of the race at a very steady gallop. He also arrives from a terribly slowly run race at Down Royal along with Galvin and Kemboy, so I couldn’t have any of those three. FURY ROAD is perhaps not the most reliable, but he did get back to winning ways at Down Royal 53 days ago, and he has a record of 12221131 on the back of a 50-day break or more. He has the potential to put in a high-class performance, and he was a good winner on this card last season when demolishing Run Wild Fred. That performance leaves him with a bit to find with the best of these, but he is improving, and he has only had seven chase starts. He looks like a fair each-way price. Royal Rendezvous is a class act, but he loves a right-handed track, and he has performed poorly twice here, and stamina is a question at this level. French Dynamite shouldn’t be good enough, while FRANCO DE PORT (my fancy for this race last year) jumped terribly in this contest last term when Bryony Frost could not get him in a rhythm. Danny Mullins will do a better job of that today, and he is a live each-way contender.
2.55 Leopardstown – Gentlemansgame (1.5pt win – 4/1 Bet365, 3/1 generally)
The lack of experience over fences for GENTLEMANSGAME should be of no concern given the effortless victory in a point-to-point at the start of his career over our recent winner Balco Coastal, and he has proven to go well enough when fresh. Every piece of form from his hurdling season last term suggests he should be favourite for this, and he is the one that could scale the heights in this division. Last seen when an excellent third in Grade 1 company, he looks good value against I Am Maximus.
3.10 Leicester – The Hollow Ginge (0.5pt win – 25/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)
It might pay to take a chance on THE HOLLOW GINGE, who has more letters than numbers by his name, but this is a drop into much calmer waters, and the regular cheek-pieces are switched out for the visor. He has shown signs the last twice that a return to a right-handed track will suit him well (can jump out to the right). He returns to Leicester, which saw him bolt up by five lengths off 19 lbs higher in 2020. The booking of Sam Twiston Davies is a positive, and he might be worth taking a small win only flyer on.
