3.00 Newcastle – ARAMAX (1pt win – 12/1 generally)
On the face of it, this is a smashing opportunity for Donny Boy to get back to winning ways with question marks over a handful of his rivals and the fact that he already has the beating of the poorly priced second favourite It’s Good To Laugh who returns from the flat. However, he is priced correctly, in my opinion, at 5/2 at the time of writing, and he had few excuses at Kelso last time, so he shouldn’t be the strongest punt if you fancy him. Looking away from the obvious, the most interesting of these is ARAMAX, who, on his best form, is well treated, and he did show much more at Wetherby when last seen 53 days ago. Interestingly, Jonjo O’Neill Jr travels all the way from the Cotswolds to Newcastle for two rides for the trainer/owner (both outsiders), and Aramax’s latest run was the first in Britain in cheek-pieces which was a step back in the right direction. It’s hard to suggest any of these are well handicapped, so he looks worth chancing as the rank outsider in a field that won’t be short of pace.
*Jonjo’s other ride is Marshalled at 15:35 for those that don’t want sod’s law hitting them square in the face.
3.45 Market Rasen – HALONDO (2pt win – 5/2 generally)
HALONDO scored with ease here 17 days ago, and providing he handles this quick turnaround, he looks like a horse to keep on the right side of. The move up in distance is a good one and opens the door for further improvement, and today’s quicker surface is another positive. He is unexposed and faces rivals that have shown their hand in the main. He clocked good closing sectionals earlier this month in victory despite being outpaced at a crucial stage, and a 10 lbs rise in the weights shouldn’t stop him, given he contests the same grade of race. He has shown race-by-race progression, particularly since fitted with the tongue tie the last twice. There’s more to come from him, and he gets a confident vote. Back him no shorter than 5/2 – I make him more of a 13/8 chance.
7.00 Kempton – Restrict (1pt win – 6/1 generally)
RESTRICT won with a good deal in hand 19 days ago at Wolverhampton to get off the mark despite looking green under pressure. He needed every yard of that sharp six furlongs and the step up in distance is a welcome sign in line with his latest effort and his pedigree. The third, Erosion Risk, is a solid form stick marker rated 72 and he went close the next twice finishing a narrow runner-up. The selection should have scored over five furlongs on his penultimate start but was stuck for room and it’s highly likely that a bare minimum trip will prove well short of his best. An opening rating of 74 quickly switched to handicaps is surely not beyond him and a good draw in stall two will give him every chance.
