2.30 Hereford – SAINT SEGAL (1.5pt win -7/4 Bet365, 13/8 generally)
SAINT SEGAL put in an improved showing on all known form when switched to fences for the first time at Chepstow in November, and he looks like a natural in this sphere. He is a horse fast on the upgrade on that evidence, and while this is his first attempt on a right-handed track, this sharp course should suit him far better than many of his rivals. Feuille De Lune drops significantly in trip, and she will find this tougher under rules, while Venetia Williams has an excellent strike rate the first time after a wind op, and Christopher Wood is a danger. Still, there’s plenty in favour of Saint Segal, and he gets the vote.
7.30 Kempton – BLOW YOUR HORN (1pt win -11/4 Betfred, 9/4 generally)
BLOW YOUR HORN was a big eye-catcher on debut for this yard at Lingfield last time in a competitive Class 4 event, and today drops back into a Class 5 for just the third time in his career. He was caught on heels at Lingfield when travelling well, and by the time he had built up enough steam, he had conceded the first run to his rivals but finished with a flurry. The slight step back up in trip to today’s 1m3f is probably still on the short side, but it bodes well that he had the pace to challenge off of a slow pace last time. He potentially has excuses for his last three runs for Rebecca Menzies, who tried him in headgear. He has a better record on the AW than on turf, and today returns to Kempton, where he ran so well in 2021 on his only visit. This track suits his style of racing with a long home straight, and there looks to be a good clip on here. Humanitarian could pose the chief threat.
