5.10 Nottingham – AUGUST (1pt win – 7/2 generally)

There is little chance that we have seen the best of AUGUST thus far, and he starts life in handicaps off of a workable rating with the promise of more to come. He has disliked the Newmarket undulations, with the first run behind Waipiro seeing him all at sea in the dip and his second behind a smart rival in Quddwah very much the same once under pressure. He stuck to the task well once hitting the rising ground, and this long home straight should see him to good effect and bring about his stamina.

7.20 Kempton – LUNATICK (2pt win – 11/2 Betfair, 9/2 generally) + DARK TROOPER (0.5pt E/W – 12/1 Betfair, 11/1 generally)

Surely LUNATICK has been let in lightly by the handicapper on all known evidence. He has twice run at this venue with credit. The first behind Mostabshir when shaping with a good deal of promise over 1m but was very green under pressure hanging away from the stick in the closing stages and looking in need of the run. The runner-up has since scored in good style at Newmarket and is rated 92, the fourth won at Chester’s May meeting and is now rated 90, and the fifth has finished runner-up and then twice a winner at Wolverhampton and Doncaster – now rated 94. His second outing saw him fourth over the 1m to Mr Mistoffelees, who has since finished three lengths off the winner in the London Gold Cup at Newbury and the second, Tajawal (who looks very well handicapped), was very unlucky not to finish closer to Artistic Star and Torito (hacked up off 95 at Epsom) having been carried across the track. The fifth from that contest is twice a winner and rated 93. The selection has since had a wind operation and returned to action at Windsor last month over 10f only to be narrowly denied by Peace Man – a subsequent winner rated 93 from the Gosden yard, and he finished clear of the subsequent Newbury winner in third, Nothing To Sea (91). All of his form stacks up to suggest this opening rating of 83 is easily within his reach, particularly back at this venue where he has run so well on two occasions, and it’s unlikely Daniel Muscutt will want to hang around with one that stays further than this distance from a good draw. He makes plenty of appeal.

I must have a small cover on DARK TROOPER, who is a huge price, given he is a highly progressive three-year-old and showed a blistering turn of foot to score here on his penultimate start. All can’t have been right at Wolverhampton when he ran flat, and re-watching the race, it seems as though something was a miss. He is too lightly raced to be written off on the back of that run and has done this column two good turns before that flop. He had been crying out for a move to seven furlongs, so anything he did before that was only a bonus. He has proven to go well fresh scoring at Southwell on the back of a 90-day break and is another that is drawn ok in stall eight. I want to save money on this selection, but I can’t let him go unbacked, given the boxes he ticks. I fully expect Lunatick to have the first run on him and be tough to catch.

7.50 Kempton – MARKSMAN QUEEN (1pt win – 9/2 Bet365, 4/1 generally)

There’s good value to be had here with MARKSMAN QUEEN, who is drawn far better than her market rival Prepense and looks to have been handed a fair opening handicap rating of 84. She has shown a great attitude to remain unbeaten despite pulling like a train in both of her outings, and today connections fit a hood. Backing John Gosden runners fitted with this headgear sees a 38% strike rate and a profit of £25 to a £1 level stake. She already has the benefit of a course win and can put it up to the well-found favourite.

9.00 Kempton – WHOLEOFTHEMOON (1pt win – 9/1 Bet365 + 888Sport, 8/1 generally)

WHOLEOFTHEMOON has been in the tracker for some time but shaped with plenty of encouragement returned to the flat after 158 days off and two spins over hurdles at Lingfield last month when considerately handled by Richard Kingscote. Visually he looked a class above his opposition, staying on underhand and heels from the rear of the field. In two starts last year, he shaped as though he was ahead of the handicapper off of this mark when staying on at the finish over 1m4f, including at Doncaster, which sees the third rated 16 lbs higher and the fourth 13 lbs higher. He is very lightly raced, and connections mixed it in some useful three-year-old handicaps and pitched him into some deep novice contest – including here when an excellent second to Aldous Huxley. With that run now under his belt, he looks worth chancing from a good draw in stall one with his unexposed profile, and a return to prominent tactics could see him go very well off this rating of 74.
