4.05 Catterick – Natural Path (2pts win – 9/4 generally)
This is an intriguing race, but there is plenty of reason to suspect an improved performance from Michael Bell’s NATURAL PATH. He ran with extreme credit in a hot Class 2 Newmarket contest back in May when third to subsequent winner Shine So Bright on return from Bahrain, and the second and fourth are both winners since.
That came over seven furlongs, though, and his effort just petered out towards the finish, and his latest two efforts have been his first two attempts on the AW surface – the first a good third again over seven furlongs which has seen the runner-up finish a close fourth in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot and the fourth and sixth subsequent winners. His effort again just petered out, and this has been a theme with his races over seven furlongs.
Today he drops back to six furlongs for the first time (in Britain) since scoring at Yarmouth in September in a more competitive race than today (Class 3). His form figures over six furlongs read 112, and today he drops into a Class 4 for the second time in his short career in Britain (the other a four-length defeat over 5f behind Raasel, who is now rated 30lbs higher) and is over the correct trip. He should be ridden prominently, and his strong finishing effort will lend itself well to this track.
This might prove sharp enough for him, but he now at least has the right trip, and this is not a strong Class 4. Embour is interesting but needs to bounce back and could be on the downgrade, while three-year-old Bay Breeze may have more to come, but this is a much stiffer task than his wins at Ripon.
5.45 Yarmouth – Lalania (0.5pt win 20/1 Paddy, Betfair, BetVictor) and (1pt W/O Kodiac Sign – 7/1 generally)
I suspect that Kodiac Sign will take a bit of beating here with a good apprentice booked but I do want to take a chance on the well-handicapped LALANIA who has scored at this venue twice and took a step back in the right direction at Newmarket.
She has failed to run a bad race at this venue and the handicapper has given her a chance dropping her five pounds for her latest effort and she hasn’t had too many chances over seven furlongs in this grade. In class 4 or lower over seven furlongs her form figures read 1 and 1, so the drop back in distance and the return to Yarmouth are reasons to be positive about her chances.
She is worth siding with without the unexposed favourite as well as a small win bet at big odds.
