Published: 9:15am – 26th July (Odds correct at time of posting, where available)
1.50 Goodwood – Luminous Light (1pt each-way – 33/1 Will Hills, 28/1 generally) (4 places)
LUMINOUS LIGHT is the rank outsider here, but he has given the firm impression that he is building towards a bigger performance, and the return to the scene of his debut triumph now up to a more suitable trip could see him in the best light.
He was quickly gelded after a disappointing effort in the London Gold Cup, and he may have needed his Chester run this term but bounced back despite not handling the undulations of Ripon earlier this month. Better is expected now, and he looks fairly treated on his Maiden win, so it might be worth chancing at lofty odds for a trainer that has won this four times in the last ten years. Soulcombe takes a step up in grade but is well handicapped and is fast on the upgrade.
The slight concern is his tendency to be slowly away, and the fact that he takes a while to warm to his task and the fact that he will probably be running over 1m6f in due course means his best work could be all too late. Secret State will find this easier than his Ascot assignment and, from a good draw must have a good shout but has not been missed in the market.
2.25 Goodwood – Oscula (1pt each-way – 11/1 Will Hills, BetVictor, 10/1 generally) (5/6 places)
The front three in the market here are drawn stalls 16, 12 and 15, yet Bilesdon Brook is the only horse that has won this race drawn higher than stall six since 2015, so this could pan out well for OSCULA.
She is turned out quickly, and providing a busy campaign hasn’t caught up with her should have things runs to suit here from a good draw in stall two. There is very little pace on offer, especially amongst those drawn low, so should connections revert to front running tactics, she could prove very hard to pass with the drop back to 7f highly likely to suit.
She was caught late at Ascot by Jumbly on Saturday, but her record over this 7f trip reads 312331 and providing she doesn’t find this coming too quickly (she has won and finished third when turned out within seven days previously), she should be hard to keep out of the frame.
4.10 Goodwood – Value Theory (1pt each-way – 14/1 generally)
I really liked the way VALUE THEORY stuck to the task at Nottingham after doing plenty early on to get the lead over an inadequate trip of 1m. The step back up in distance today is a big positive for her chances.
The handicapper continues to relent, and she has had few opportunities on a quick surface. Her third in the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket last term and her excellent sixth (beaten three lengths) here in the Prestige Stakes set the form standard today. She is back in against her own sex for the first time as a three-year-old, and that could make all the difference today.
