3.50 Musselburgh – Poet’s Dawn (1pt win – 9/4 generally)
POET’S DAWN is 20 pounds lower in the weights as he was this time last year, and it was a step back in the right direction at Carlisle when narrowly denied in Class 4 company. Today’s race represents his first attempt down into a Class 6, and he should find this sharper track to his liking.
Four of his six wins have come at Beverley, and this track has similarities, and he ran well enough on his only visit back in 2018. He is turned out quickly and has been so within seven days eight times in his career, and when ridden by David Allan, he has scored once and finished second by a nose. He won’t be presented too many better opportunities than this, and connections apply first-time cheek-pieces in the hope he sees out his race stronger.
Five of his six wins have come on a right-handed track, and there’s not much else you could pin in his favour, and with rain due tomorrow and the potential of easing in the ground (2-7 on good to soft), that will only enhance his chances and hinder his biggest danger Irv.
4.00 Thirsk – Rathbone (1pt win – 8/1 Sky Bet, bet365, Will Hills)
Aplomb is likely to run his race, but he has been frustrating for some time and doesn’t look a mile ahead of the handicapper. Cairn Gorm has never really shown enough speed for six furlongs, but his new connections are likely to find the key to him sooner or later.
RATHBONE scored in this contest last year and can be forgiven for his latest effort at Hamilton in the blinkers, for which his record in that headgear now reads 96009512193. It’s likely the effect has worn off, but it’s also likely that connections did that on purpose to reapply the cheek-pieces, and in such circumstances, his record reads 1 and 2.
He performs at his best at this Thirsk venue with form figures of 29114, and in races with ten or fewer runners, he has won four of his 11 starts. He offers some value in this contest.
4.20 Musselburgh – Primo’s Comet (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, 6/1 generally)
There’s so much pace on in this race, with Militia, Modular Magic, Mas Poder and Apache Star all having made the running in their recent starts, and at least three only have one way of going. Rory ran on Monday, and it’s likely the yard will stick with PRIMO’S COMET, given the make-up of this race. He signalled that he was coming to the boil at Hamilton last time, and the presence of Paul Mulrennan back in the saddle here at Musselburgh is a big positive.
He drops back into a class 4 today but catching him at Musselburgh in June or July sees form figures of 9231512, and all five of his career wins on turf have come at this venue. He has possible excuses for his runs this term. He may have needed his reappearance effort when 9/12 at 20/1 (big drifter in the market), and then he was given too much to do when denied a clear run here off 5lbs higher in April before strangely leading the field for the first time in at least three years.
He was drawn on the wing in June when 9/11 under the very inexperienced Shannon Watts in an apprentice handicap, but today gets the ideal set-up. With the majority of the pace on the inside of him, he should be able to slot in behind and get a good tow into the contest before quickening up as the pace collapses. Any rain shouldn’t pose too much of an issue
5.50 Bath – Amazonian Dream (1pt win – 6/1 bet365, 5/1 Paddy, Betfair)
AMAZONIAN DREAM caught the eye at Windsor when travelling strongly but was unable to make his challenge as he was hampered when last off the bridle. He went to make a second effort when the door had closed on him as the winner scooted away.
That gave the impression he may be about ready to strike off of this falling handicap mark and now sneaks into a 0-80 after being dropped eight pounds this term. The slight drop back in trip can be viewed positively, and any rain will enhance his chances.
